Athens Wastewater Plant upgrades marked with ribbon cutting

The ribbon was cut Friday for an $18 million Athens Wastewater Treatment Plant improvements project. Dignitaries toured the new facility before the ceremony as Andy Stone of the Athens Department of Engineering and Public Works highlighted global sanitation gaps and local aging infrastructure. He noted the plant dates to the 1950s, studies by EPA, and a 2008 start to consolidate departments. A bare bones fix would have cost $4 million, with the project now underway. see Page A3.
