The annual Santa Sleigh Parade in Athens features deer and ponies, with Santa in a pot of gold sleigh. Dignitaries and children from local schools will greet him on Washington Street and Court Street offices as part of a holiday event leading to Christmas Eve preparations.

Felix J. Wider and Frank Kline of Columbus face robbery and breaking and entering charges in Magistrate S. B. Whitehart's court over the Lovett filling station robbery last Thursday morning. Arraignments followed Wider’s transfer from Sheltering Arms Hospital to Hocking County Jail. Each defendant pled not guilty and posted bonds of five thousand dollars.
Los Angeles police held Charles N. Layman, 44, a water street worker, on suspicion of murder after four WPA laborers were shot in a drainage ditch on Monday. Victims were Lloyd Holden 42 Peter Coklit 46 Harry Sell 86 and Lloyd Davis 2. Three others were wounded.
The Great Lakes district committee announced Louis Fretchlling of Hamilton a Miami University student as one of four outstanding students for 1935 Rhodes Scholarships at the University of Oxford.
A nearly three mile extension of State Route 31 from Floodwood to The Plains Road will be let January 7 at the State Highway Director’s Columbus office. The $207 631 25 project requires 140 working days, uses brick on concrete pavement, and includes relocation to reduce curves from 12 to five.
The Salvation Army under Adjt. W. W. Hinshaw seeks funds and food for Christmas baskets for Athens families. Donations of flour potatoes canned fruits sugar apples and other items are welcomed at the office or as money in street kettles. Last year eight baskets were given and many outside families will be helped if funds allow. At the Eagles Toy Shop dolls are scarce and residents urged to donate dolls to bring Christmas joy to girls in need.

Todd, 30, was found slumped behind the wheel in her garage Monday morning by her maid after a cafe party late Sunday.
In Whitesburg Kentucky a 22 year old father Robert Mahan is jailed on murder charges for the nine month old Thomas Mahan death. His wife Helen Mahan 18 was jailed after testifying against him. The baby suffered a broken thigh bone and spine curvature with death blamed on pneumonia.
In Culver City California Irvin B Cobb critiques elders who fear youth as ministers reflect on modern youth and fame. He argues against blaming the coming generation and traces fault to Adam the original experimentalist.
Ohio House discusses a proposed unemployment insurance bill requiring employers to pay three percent of payroll into a state fund while workers would not contribute. The SEW federal rule baseline is one percent. Labor backs early enactment. chambers seek a provision to shield the bill if federal law is ruled unconstitutional.

In St Louis Herbert Hoover attacked Roosevelt relief efforts as wasteful and political. He proposed decentralized relief funded by voluntary private and local efforts, with states and communities taking lead and federal allotments cut sharply. He condemned New Deal bureaucracy and cited rising relief costs amid falling unemployment.

Ellwood Verity aged 32 died Monday afternoon at his parents home in Fisher Station after four years of ill health. Survived by wife Mary of Columbus a daughter Jacqueline two sisters and two brothers. Funeral at 2 p m Wednesday at Hebbardsville Presbyterian Church with burial nearby.

The American Legion urged cash payment of the bonus at the White House with national commander Ray Murphy and John Thomas Taylor. They briefed President Roosevelt on the Legion legislative program including pensions for widows and dependents, universal service for wartime, and strong national defense. Murphy declined to discuss the President's reaction but said a bonus bill passage is hoped, and suggested unity with Veterans of Foreign Wars for the next Congress session.
POMEROY. George Leifheit 74 died Monday night at his Mulberry Avenue home after a week of illness. A severe cold led to pneumonia last Thursday. He leaves his wife two daughters Mia and Wilbur Reeves of Chillicothe Mrs Ida Russell of Bucyrus one son Charles and several grandchildren. Mrs Reeves arrived Sunday to be at the bedside. Mrs Russell expected tonight. Funeral plans not complete.
Glouster retail merchants will meet Thursday December 26 at 7 30 p m in the mayor's office. The gathering aims to discuss local business problems and form a new Retail Merchants Association to cooperate with the Clerks union. All retail businesses are invited to send representatives.
The Bureau of Mines reports soft coal production for the week ended Dec 7 at 8,235,000 tons, up 822,000 tons from the prior week. Pennsylvania anthracite output reached 1,147,000 tons, versus 707,000 tons in the same week of 1934.

Three prisoners in the Nicholas Castano kidnapping cave were killed by a gunfire blast during an attack on a Cubana army car transporting Castano toward Havana after his release. Two rural guards freed the kidnapped capitalist from a farm near San Antonio De Las Vegas, 30 miles inland, and captured five men and a woman connected with the case.
