Assault on Townsend Ends in Arrests After Church Corner Beating
A brutal unprovoked assault occurred Friday night at the Presbyterian church corner in Athens. Police pursued John Hamilton and Hugh and Jesse Patterson after Townsend, an opera house policeman, was knocked down, beaten, and cut. Townsend’s wife witnessed the attack. Hamilton was arrested Saturday and bound over to the grand jury on $200 bond. the Pattersons were bound over on $3800 bonds each and remained at large or in custody with their father aiding.

Trustees awarded the library contract to Charles Kircher of Columbus for 18974 dollars. The pressed brick, one and a half story structure with a stone band will sit on the campus southwest corner facing east near Ewing hall. Construction starts in winter with local labor and target to roof by centennial week and finish by September 1. Resolutions were adopted honoring longtime trustee Hon. W. E. Bundy.

It’s All Settled Now Debating Society Wins
The Factory Friday evening literary and debating society held a discussion on whether poverty has caused more crime than wealth. Messrs Hatch and Matheny argued for the affirmative while Miss Mary Beasley and D O Seaman spoke for the negative. Judges awarded the victory to the affirmative amid audience interest. The negative felt no humiliation and invites all to next Friday’s meeting.

Death of F M Hawkins at 59 in Athens area
Francis M Hawkins died Monday near Athens from paralysis at age 59. His funeral was held Wednesday at his son P D Hawkins of Mill Street home with Dr T L Lowe officiating. Interment was in the old cemetery. He leaves a wife and one son and was a Civil War veteran.

Turkey Scratch Death From Thanksgiving Turkey
Spencer Young 58, a longtime Athens meat dealer, died after a turkey scratch on his right third finger led to blood poisoning. He became severely swollen, delirious, and died Friday at the Palmer House after a period of great pain. He leaves a wife, three daughters, and siblings. Funeral services were held at J. W. Hines home.

Three Men Sentenced as Kirby Receives Sixty Day Term
In common pleas court James H. Kirby of Oakdale was found guilty on one embezzlement count for $17.40 and sentenced to sixty days in the Columbus workhouse plus costs. Cases of divorce were granted to four wives, including Alice Evans and Cora Milligan, with alimony noted. Sheriff Murphy sent three prisoners to the penitentiary for terms of two or three years for shooting with intent to kill.

Crusade Meeting Marks 30th Anniversary
The W T U met Tuesday with Mrs. Mattie Berry to celebrate thirty years since the Woman's Crusade began in Hillsboro. Hawkins Hurt in Fall at Home in Nelsonville
Arthur Hawkins fell from a second floor platform while helping with chores after his mother fell ill. The banister gave way and he struck his head from about twenty feet, remaining unconscious until Sunday evening. doctors fear possible fatal injuries.
