Judge Lowell B. Howard told 75 attendees at the Christmas dinner sponsored by Conrath Bean DAV Chapter and Floyd Bolin VFW post that patriotism rests on family and church besides the nation. He cited rising Naval Academy applications as signs of renewed service spirit and noted veterans, DAV and VFW leaders as core to civic duty.

Board Approves Sheep and Hog Barn Plan for Fairgrounds
Athens County fair board approved improvements including a new sheep and hog barn to replace last summer’s burned structure and to house about 450 animals yearly. A larger show and sales arena and cattle barn expansion were recommended, with the dairy barn to be turned over to 4-H and vocational groups.

The Lawhead Press Inc. earned an outstanding merit award for graphic arts in a contest by French Paper Co. for Waynesburg College alumni magazine The Lamp.
