The UN Security Council prepares for a vote on a U S resolution calling for a cease fire and troop withdrawal between India and Pakistan. Diplomats warn the measure may be vetoed again if not amended. Ambassador Farah urges leadership toward unanimous agreement.
George Rush notes reluctance by India to accept the cease-fire resolution while Pakistan accepts it. U Thant shares Indira Gandhi’s letter urging a cease-fire and troop withdrawal in East Pakistan with a call for peaceful settlement with Bangladesh.
In the Azores Nixon and Pompidou held 22 hours of talks focusing on Nixon's planned trips to Peking and Moscow and on the international monetary crisis. A high level team including Connally Kennedy Rogers Kissinger and Hillebrand backed the discussions as Caetano hosted a formal dinner. Nixon's return to the United States is set for Tuesday after a schedule of allied talks in Bermuda Key Biscayne San Clemente and elsewhere.

A 32 year old Logan Route 3 man Tommy Lee Smith was shot and killed at 27 Mound St in Athens after breaking into the Dickens home while brandishing two guns. Paratroopers report linkups as fighting intensifies and foreign evacuees flee to Calcutta during a four hour airlift.
At least 22 construction workers are dead after an explosion in a six mile tunnel under Lake Huron. Eight others were injured as investigators from four agencies begin probing the blast site 230 feet below the lake surface. Local officials and engineers described rescue challenges and earlier gas suspicion while noting sensors and alarms were in place.
Nineteen people died in state traffic accidents over the weekend. In Toledo five youths perished in a car train collision Saturday while a Sunday crash near Springfield claimed another life.
David Sarnoff, broadcasting pioneer and RCA executive, died aged 80 in New York. Born in Russia, he entered the field as a messenger and rose to lead NBC and RCA, influencing radio and television’s growth after guiding coverage of the Titanic disaster.
