Glove Contest in Montgomery’s Barn Fails Amid Arrest Warrant

A planned ten round boxing match between Bob Swett and Doc Walker in Montgomery’s barn at Gook's Crossing Rome township did not occur after Deputy Sheriff Beasley arrived with a warrant. The crowd of about five hundred continued dancing as arrests halted the bout. Swett and Walker were detained, with Walker jailed briefly in Athens.

Captain Riggs Injured In Caboose Accident

Captain Riggs division superintendent of the B & O SW sustained two broken ribs when a sudden jolt in a caboose near Belpre hurled him against a store. He was brought to Athens on No.3 and received surgical care at his Union Street home.

Death at Nelsonville follows illness of young Lambourne

The ten year old daughter of Byron Lambourne died Saturday in Nelsonville from spinal meningitis. Former Nelsonville resident, Lambourne now resides in Parkersburg where the remains were taken Monday for interment beside his wife, Grace Wright Lambourne, formerly of Athens.

Two Days Session of Athens County Sunday School Meet

The ninth annual Athens County Sunday School Association convention met in Coolville over two days with 203 attendees from across the county. Sessions highlighted leadership talks on the pastor and superintendent roles, township organization, and methods to boost attendance, ending with elected officers and resolutions urging active use of the association program.

Survivors of the 7th C V C plan an annual reunion in Loveland Ohio on September 14 to 15 after a Cincinnati gathering last year. The first meeting starts at 2 00 p m on the 14th. President Capt Rankin has died since the last meeting, with members urged to attend and remember fallen comrades.

Seventh annual convention of the Christian Endeavor Union of Athens Presbytery will be held at Vote Washington County August 31 and September 1. Dr W F McCauley of Dennison and many leading ministers and lay workers are on the program. All Presbyterian C E societies in Athens and other counties should send delegates. A happy occasion at the home of Mr and Mrs John Finsterwald on Tuesday afternoon August 15 marked their daughter Guynelle reaching her seventh milestone. About twenty five children attended and all expressed joy and hope to celebrate future birthdays with Guynelle.

Warren's Horses Racing Report From West Virginia

County Democrats hold Athens county nominating convention

In a chaotic Athens county Democratic convention in the city court room, delegates assembled for a ticket amid disorder. S. G. Linscott was named for representative, Frank Bryson for probate judge, and J. C. Headley won the prosecuting attorney post by two votes. Davidson, a longtime party figure, was not chosen. Resolutions reaffirmed Chicago platform principles and Bryan’s 1900 renomination. Central committee members from 28 precincts were listed, with adjournment after instructing them to meet post state convention.

Deaths at Marshfield recount four elders in days

In Marshfield August 3 three aged residents died within 48 hours. Mrs Louthwan aged 60 died from head disease, funeral in St Pauls Athens tomorrow. David Williams 84, member of Constitution Lodge F and A M, funeral at 2 pm Marshfield cemetery. John Beverage 85 died at home, funeral and interment Thursday. Dr William McPherson 82 critically ill, Marshfield store closed.
