Four children ages 3 to 8 were killed when a car driven by Floyd Uber, a peddler, struck them while they walked home from play in Youngstown. Uber was jailed on intoxication charges as authorities investigate the roadside tragedy.
Dr. William Beebe and Otis Barton descended 3028 feet in a Bathysphere near Bermuda setting a depth record. They sighted a large gray unknown fish about 20 feet long beneath a diamond like glow from phosphorescent parasites but could not identify it.
In a Board ordered election the workers at Cleveland Worsted mill plants chose United Textile Workers of America as their bargaining representative. The vote followed a settlement plan set for March 25 and involved the United Textile Group and local executive secretaries.
Russell of Gallia County faces a first degree murder charge after a Tuesday incident. He was arraigned before Judge Fred Millisor on August 16, and remains without bail as authorities pursue formal findings.
Baton Rouge August 16 The Huey Long revolt against New Orleans Mayor T Semmes Walmsley sparks warnings of Hitlerism and bloodshed as 28 Long drafted bills move toward final action in a special session. Representative Rupert Peyton, an anti Long leader, issued the alert on the floor last night.
The Railroad Retirement Board ordered all Class 1 railroads to immediately pay one tenth of one percent of their July payrolls to the U S treasurer to fund the railroad pension law. Attorneys had argued against injunctive operation while constitutionality was in question.
In Akron on August 16 three masked hold-up men overtook two officials and a messenger from the Albrecht Grocery Co en route to a bank and escaped with 87000 in cash and bonds.

Louis J Eberle wins the Democratic nomination for state senator in the 6th 14th District. Verner E Metcalf is the Republican nominee. Judge Russell K McCurdy wins the Fourth Judicial District nomination. Judge Frank Delay wins in Athens County but not the full district. W R Palmer wins Republican nomination for state senator in the 20th 22nd District. Kenneth C Ray selected as Republican candidate for Congress in the Fifteenth District by a margin over two rivals.
Elizabeth Judy 62 wife of A J Judy drowned this morning after prying cistern lid with an iron bar and slipping in. Husband found her. Dr M H Cherrington failed to revive. Coroner Vance Brian reports the death. Survived by two sons Wilford Canton and Joseph Coshocton and daughter Mrs James Bitler Lancaster.
Troy youths Richard Hunt and Robert Ferguson, both 15, were credited with saving two Rev. G. W. Hall’s sons after they fell into the Miami River. The boys dove repeatedly, located the youngsters, brought them to shore, and administered artificial respiration.
In Caruthersville Missouri August 16 a prospective bidder attorney Charlies L Waugh was attacked by farmers in the courthouse hall after he indicated he would bid at a farm tax sale for drainage district bonds. He was beaten into unconsciousness though the sale proceeded with owners bidding their own properties. County officials said no prosecutions would be filed and no suspects identified.
The heaviest rainfall in one month brought relief to parched farms. Farmers welcomed moisture to prepare fields for plowing and planting and to aid corn and pasture lands. Zanesville recorded 3.20 inches in 24 hours while MecConnelville logged 2.97 and Athens 1.23 inches.
Chicago on August 16 saw bus riders going to work under police supervision as union drivers of the Chicago Motor Coach Company walked off the job. The strike ends a four month clash over the dismissal of 24 union members for alleged safety rule violations.
Ohio Supreme Court Judge Howard L. Bevis visited Athens County and sought reelection for the unexpired term ending December 31, 1936. He won the Democratic nomination without opposition at Tuesday’s primary. his home is in Cincinnati.
Toronto and London Galaxy police push fronts in kidnapping probe of John Labatt wealth brewer held for 150000 ransom. Hugh Labatt made three calls to the kidnapers from his hotel as authorities guard Labatt’s likely route and seek payment while avoiding disclosure. An official count of ballots cast in Athens County's Tuesday primary began this morning by the board of elections. While some race figures may change, winners from the unofficial tabulation are not expected to. Tax Commissioner George C. Braden of Warren showed improved condition after his physician said he was suffering encephalitis. He radiated elation upon learning he won the Republican nomination for secretary of state by about 20 000 votes and asked where the votes came from.
Twenty airplanes assisted in the hunt for three Milwaukee yachtsmen reported missing, but the search yielded no results.
A ferry capsized on the Darihara stretch near Patna injuring about 200 aboard. Officials attributed overloading and animals on board as the cause. Rescue attempts saved a fraction, while many passengers drowned after the vessel flipped and sank.
A terrific cloud burst in the Guyan Valley West Virginia near Huntington swept across the Ohio Valley. Reports say several people were killed more than a hundred homeless and tobacco worth millions ruined. Wires were blown down and washed out by the storm.

Columbus August 16 AP Leaders of the primaries move to unite factions for the November fight. Donahey backed by Roosevelt forces will face Fess, the NRA critic, as messages of support and reconciliations surface from Davey Brown and other party leaders after the governor and senate races. About 1.23 million ballots were cast in two Ohio primaries with Davey and Brown favored in their regions.
Heavy rain drenched the Athens area this morning driving temperatures down to the seventies. By 1 PM rainfall reached 1.44 inches with more expected tonight. Yesterday reached a high of 92 and a low of 70. this afternoon's reading was 76.
