Messenger primaries draw crowd in Athens county

Several hundred persons obtained returns at the Messenger office last night in Athens county and across the state. Voters viewed figures as they appeared on a screen near the post office, with observers noting heightened interest. The Messenger party crowd stayed until the elections board closed shortly before 2 am, as state and local returns were shown on slides updated about 7:30 pm.

County official primary results in Meigs county list votes

Meigs county voters favor Myers Y Cooper for governor with 2411 votes while Turner receives 1789 and Begg 1362. Irving Karr leads county commissioner with 4175 votes as Smith totals 3297. Other races show Jones 3774 for state representative and Engel 3916 for clerk of courts among notable tallies.

Snake tale from Chesterhill claims 76 snakes slain

Paul Smith of Chesterhill Morgan county says he killed 76 snakes in his garden including an old snake and 75 young ones. He lists neighbors W A Huffman and Fred Kirkbride as witnesses to verify the feat.

High Powered Gunfire At Mine Prompted Officer Response

Shots from a high powered gun targeted the tipple at the Nelsonville-Murray Coal Company mine in New Pittsburg prompting calls for Hocking County officers and Nelsonville National Guard units. The incident occurred shortly after 10 PM with Deputy Sheriffs and Nelsonville officers responding. Midday details and investigation results were not available.

Pomeroy Mason Bridge to Meet Soon in Early Completion

Aug 15 Pomeroy. If no accident or delay occurs the ends of the Pomeroy Mason bridge will meet and join over the river center on August 21. After that the pedestrian walk hanging painting floors and other details will follow. The bridge is expected to be completed weeks ahead of schedule and the steel crew may move to another project within three weeks.

Williams Told to Co-operate with National Guard Observers

Athens county Sheriff William Williams was urged by Governor Donahey to extend full cooperation to National Guard observers in mine field areas. Donahey ordered Williams to enforce laws and report any Guard missteps promptly to ensure the economic tragedy is addressed.

Begg Leads Over Turner in Hocking County Returns

Unofficial Hocking County results show James T. Begg leading Edward C. Turner by 91 votes for the Republican gubernatorial nomination. County results span governor to prosecuting attorney with several races contested and many unicontested nominees noted.

Close, hard fought primary in Athens County races

Final unofficial returns show Herb J. Parker winning sheriff with 3381 votes, W. E. Moler leading for county treasurer by 224, and J. W. Lax and John H. Grosvenor elected county commissioners in tight contests. Myers Y. Cooper surged in governor race with 3076 votes. Alex M. Moore led lieutenant governor, and J. W. Wilson topped the surveyor race by 2000.
