Smoke halted aerial surveys and planes could not move crews to fire centers as 4000 men fought multiple blazes.
Six hundred members and affiliated agents of Appalachian Coals Inc met in Cincinnati to build a sales program for the Appalachian bituminous field. The plan targets freight differentials and gas oil and electricity competition, with market research, regional dealer meetings, a trade magazine for 30,000 buyers, and extensive mail and personal follow up. The effort could affect 60,000 coal miners and 30,000 railroad workers.
Peaceful picketing continued at six Aluminum Company of America plants near Pittsburgh as a three day employes strike kept the sites idle. Officials said no operation will resume until arbitration, with U S Labor Department conciliator Fred Keightly expected to begin mediation conferences. The dispute centers on closed shop demands and federal mediation efforts.
William Green, AFL president, refused to alter official unemployment figures pegged at 10.5 million. The Chamber of Commerce of the United States criticized the estimate as 3 million too high. Green defended the data in Atlantic City.
Washington news notes better government bond prices cheered Treasury officials as inflation talk was cooled. The Treasury disclosed purchases of 45,008,100 in government bonds and 22,000,000 Home Owners Loan Corp bonds last week. They aim to borrow 1,700,000,000 next month for refinancing, and Secretary Morgenthau stressed no plan to issue silver backed currency as allowed by law.
Two aged residents of Racine and Rutland died this week in Meigs County. John Miller of Racine, a Spanish American War veteran, died at his home after a period of critical illness. Survived by wife Eva, brother Andrew J. Miller of Hartford W Va and sister Mrs Catharine Crawley of Kentucky. John N Beckley 91 a Rutland native died at home leaving son E H Beckley Columbus and step son B M Taylor Rutland. Funeral arrangements set 2 p m Wednesday from residence with Rev Bolton, burial Miles Cemetery. William Brown killed Monday to have funeral at Val Brown residence due to a change in arrangements.
Chicago reports at noon show grain traders lifting wheat to near yesterday’s finish while corn strength supports gains. Provisions rise sharply with hog values and lard hits a new season high.
Goshen set for a large three year old trot lineup with Aasi Hight and favorite Emily Stokes among the entries for the Hambietonian stallion race tomorrow at the county fair track.
Tokyo reports a Japanese naval committee announces proceeding with ship construction regardless of permission. If allowed at the next conference they will have ships. if not allowed they will have ships anyway. Also notes a Japanese American swimming meet and a coach remarks on backstroke technique.
Detroit Tigers open a five game set with the New York Yankees at the Stadium before 70 000 fans as Lefty Vernon Gomez faces Alvin Crowder. Crosetti Saltzgaver Ruth Gehrig and Lazzeri produce early offense while Fox and White go down in order. Three runs and four hits in the first two innings give the Yankees a 3 0 edge.
Pasadena dispatch reports Mary Pickford arriving from Chicago saying she will meet estranged husband Douglas Fairbanks in Hollywood soon. She refused to confirm reconciliation or discuss domestic affairs while calling public interest excessive. Fairbanks is en route from Europe to New York aboard the Rex.
From Republic Steel chairman Tom M. Girdler comes a categorical denial that Republic has renewed its contract with the Amalgamated Association of Iron Steel and Tin Workers. The company refused to renew last June citing a radical element growing within the union.
The Harding Oak at Wilsons Corners north of London on U. Route 42 was badly damaged by a wind storm. Local crews reported significant limb loss and danger to the surrounding area as authorities assess next steps.
Voters flood Ohio polling places as a large field of candidates contests state and federal offices in early primary voting. Democrats lead in projected total votes with about 646 000 while Republicans tally around 812 000, a record turnout with polls open 6 30 am to 6 30 pm.
In Free State Ireland a woman, Mrs. Eamonn ONeill, intervened amid a battle between 5000 farmers and 300 Civil Guards over a tax sale. Gunfire ceased as she pleaded for peace. Jeremiah Lynch, a wounded farmer, died later, with over 100 injured.
In Cleveland on August 14 Mrs Pauline Golabotf aged 70 was awakened by two robbers who bound and blindfolded her and pressed lighted matches to her bare feet after she refused to reveal the location of money. They escaped with two dollars. She freed herself, called neighbors and was treated in hospital for burned feet.
Sumner Welles said a new Cuban reciprocal trade treaty should be completed shortly after a discussion with President Roosevelt. He reported progress in negotiating the trade terms, the first under the new tariff bargaining legislation.
Chicago reports Aug 14 that the military department of the Knights of Pythias asks the War Department to allow a merger with the National Guard in case of a Communist uprising.
Voters and citizens are told to follow official results tonight at The Messenger building starting at 8 o'clock. The Messenger amplifiers will broadcast returns as precincts report, with running totals posted and state totals provided via Associated Press wires. A Election Night Party is planned and a contact line is offered for those unable to attend.

Mrs. Elizabeth Nelson aged 79 widow of R W Nelson died at her Motherwell Avenue home after a four week illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 PM at the U B Church with Rev B C Peters officiating and burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. She came to Logan twenty years ago from Cambridge and was mother to BE L Nelson city treasurer James Nelson and four daughters and two sons living elsewhere.
Two men robbed the City Loan Co. office in Marion and escaped with 1,264 in cash and checks. They confined cashier Bryan Stalter and clerk Ruth Ritshaupt in the manager’s office, wore masks and one wore gun glasses, marking the third holdup at the site in two years.
Marion report says Catherine Cryder 4 died when the car she rode in with neighbors overturned after leaving a dead pear tree. Mee Alien Cryder and her four children were in the vehicle following a neighbor’s invitation for a drive.
TOGAN Aug 4. Willard Wells four year old son of a local oil field worker fell about 40 feet from a top of a derrick at Flowing Head injuries caused his death shortly after the fall. Bam Wells his brother witnessed the tragedy. Wells of Lagan was an oil derrick builder and had worked in Mt. Pleasant Michigan. A widow and two daughters and a brother survive. Funeral plans to be announced later.
In Defiance on August 14 a knife attack wounded Mies Mariel Krotz, the seventh woman harmed in a string of assaults beginning in May. Police and a vigilante group hunted a young man described similarly to prior suspects. the wound was slight and no arrest made.
William Miller of Athena was committed to the Columbia Work House by Mayor L. B. McCune after failing to pay a $250 fine plus costs for intoxication. He was arrested by Chief EB Finsterwald and Patrolman Carmen Church. Dewey plead not guilty Monday, later pleaded guilty and was fined $25 and costs with bond furnished.
Ohio Democrats nominated three New Deal candidates for Senate while Republicans weighed rerunning Senator Simeon D. Fess. Light to heavy early voting varied by county as weather cooperated. Notable battles included governor and other state offices with factions among White Donahey Vorys and Fess supporters shaping a crowded field.
Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Charles Ho Hubbell finished a multi day walk from Marion to Cleveland. He voted for himself at his precinct then returned home saying the election is a walk away for Hubbell. His feet were sore but spirit high as he ended the pavement pounding trek.
A toddler Ralph Starts age one and a half acted after being bitten by a dog. He grabbed the dog by the head hair and bit the pup on the note, then set the dog down. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Storta on TL Stewart Street.
