A nine year old boy from M was badly burned in a morning explosion near Galli. A companion, aged 35, was also injured and taken to hospital. Details remain unclear as authorities investigate the blast and cause.
Local Red Cross group meets at six in the Commerce Rooms to elect officers for the upcoming period. Mrs Rose Ruth Meretary is in charge of organizing duties and the principal speaker will be announced.
A 16 year old boy suffered injuries in an incident near Syracuse and was taken to Holzer Hospital where it was reported not critical. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Pine Grove. The event occurred Saturday and involved medical operation.
William Brown twenty four of near Pomeroy was found dead on State Highway 31 at Enterprise after leaving home two hours earlier. Officials note skull fractures and left side gash. accident theory favored though murder possible. Survived by wife Ruby and one two year old son, parents, three brothers, two sisters. Funeral plans not set.
SYLVA, N. C. Aug. 13. Albert Teester, rattlesnake evangelist, showed his cured arm after a venom test of faith. He credited recovery to Jesus Christ and preached amid shouts. The rattler died when a congregant killed it in anger.
In Pittsburgh the Aluminum Company of America strike remains deadlocked as mediation talks begin in Washington. Three plants at Logan's Ferry New Kensington and Arnold with about 10 000 workers stay closed until the dispute is resolved. John Bowen of the Labor Relations Board will lead talks with the National Association of Aluminum Workers and company officials.
Will Rogers recounts a Honolulu dinner with Roosevelt and his advice on Japan. He says Roosevelt urged restraint and warned against provoking Japan, noting they will build a larger navy regardless and should be kept from attacking the country.
Dr. W. D. Ennis of Stevens Institute credits Herbert Hoover with foundational efforts for the National Recovery Administration. He cites Hoover's trade practice conferences as encouraging business government partnership, addressing anti trust impacts, unfair competition, and product standardization. Ennis warns currency inflation would wreck the NRA and trigger severe labor turmoil.
Mrs Ruth L Hyde 3 wife of William P Hyde 87 Bradford Pa committed suicide by jumping from a Niagara Falls cable car crossing the gorge 20 feet above the whirlpool rapids. Her stepson said he knew of no reason. husband thought she had gone home.
Augustus Thomas a leading American playwright and dean of his field died at age 76 from a stroke at Clarkstown Country Club on Sunday. The noted dramatist had long shaped American theater and his passing is reported from New York.
Don Gonzalo Manuel Maria Bernardo Narciso Alfonso Mauricio, 19, fourth son of former King Alfonso of Spain, died in Poertschach am Woerthersee after a car crash. His sister Infanta Beatriz, 25, drove the car to avoid a cyclist. Gonzalo bled to death from his condition, while family officials debated burial.
NEW PHILADELPHIA Aug 13 A 35 290 000 plan to avert flood damage in 16 Ohio counties via the Muskingum watershed project was announced by Major J D Arthur Jr head of the army engineers. Fifteen reservoirs will be built on Muskingum tributaries, using 6 000 to 8 000 workers for years. The project covers 71 2 percent of the 6 959 square miles above Zanesville and may require shifting seven villages to higher ground. Work could begin by November 1 with earthworks 800 to 4 900 feet long and 40 to 118 feet high.
Washington reports daily repayments of corn loans exceed $1 million with total repaid at $26,260,464 since the program began last November. Farmers received 45 cents per bushel on 254,532,000 stored bushels via 142,368 borrowers totaling $120,447,500. Ohio issued $280,000 to 477 borrowers with $50,392 repaid.
Clyde Beatty a famed circus animal trainer from Chillicothe saved four men adrift in Niagara River near Fort Erie Ontario. He threw a long line to the rowboat bearing New York and Buffalo passengers and hauled the craft to calm water before many witnessed the rescue.
A large section of the lip of the Niagara Falls collapsed into the gorge today near the horseshoe falls. The 200 yard wide and 50 foot deep break sent a huge column of water into the air and left a gouge in the crest between the falls center and the Canadian shore.
Mrs Albina Lehr 83 widow of Dr Henry Solomon Lehr founder of Northern University died today from a heart attack in ADA. Dr Lehr died ten years ago.
In Benton County Mississippi two mobs overpowered officers and hanged Robert Jones and Smith Honey, alleged slayers linked to the Dennis Gillispie murder. The victims were seized while being moved to court, near the site of a prior deputy death, as circuit court opened.
President Roosevelt orders federal purchase of any foodstuffs likely to go to waste and demands an apolitical relief campaign amid drought. Indications point to a larger drought fund than 525 million dollars, as relief workers urge more money and tighter controls to curb profiteering while crop estimates hit a 30 year low.
Rev. John Paul Jones, chair of Brooklyn Church and Mission Federation committee on civic and moral welfare, criticizes churches for Sunday drive on film reform. He warns any church attempt to dictate the public’s film fare will strike at American principles of personal liberty.
George Weat of The Plains was fined 30 dollars and costs by Mayor L B McCune after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct and intoxication. He paid 25 dollars and costs on the first charge and 5 dollars and costs on the second. West was arrested Saturday night by Chief Be Finsterwald after allegedly beating Robert Ruth in front of the courthouse. Ruth was taken to Sheltering Arms Hospital with numerous cuts, bruises, and several fractured ribs. Elmer Dewey of Athens pleaded not guilty to intoxication and a hearing date was not set. Wyatt Cunningham pleaded guilty to intoxication and was fined 5 dollars and costs.
Secretary of State George W. Myers announced a staff of election observers will be sent into Cleveland as a precautionary measure in the interest of an honest election.
Dr. George C. Schaeffer aged 64, noted for plastic surgery fame earned in France during the war, died in Leporta after a year of illness.
Biarritz France August 13 The Prince of Wales refused a French life saving medal offered in recognition of heroism after assisting in saving a boy from drowning in a pool last week The heir to the British throne declined the honor despite receiving numerous commendations.
On August 1 railroads filed suit in the District of Columbia Supreme Court seeking an injunction to block the Federal Railroad Retirement Board from enforcing the pension law passed by Congress. The action, led by R. V. Fletcher for the American Railway Association, targets more than 15 railroads and requests an immediate temporary restraining order pending a hearing on a permanent injunction. The suit contends the law violates the commerce clause by taking property without due process.
Eighty district and county health supervisors met in Jackson to review sanitary outside privies under CWA and FERA programs. Since December over 1,000 privies were built in southern Ohio with 40 more since February 15, and state plans extend to 50 additional counties. United States Public Health Service and FERA support under state organization led by Dr. R. W. DeCrow and a team including L. H M. Craigton, A. W. Caird, O. C. Fulton, and Kenneth A. Lynn.
Captain Percy Tetlow president of District 6 United Mine Workers of America told a mass meeting at the Athens County Fair grounds that the Hocking Valley district has 30 000 members now up from about a thousand a few years ago He praised the NRA impact on the coal industry.
At a Sunday Athens County mass meeting Phillip Murray and Capt. Percy Tetlow urged making the National Industrial Recovery Act permanent for coal while backing unemployment insurance and old age pensions.
