County Home Water Ruled As Unsafe And Home Conditions Criticized

Athens County commissioners heard a double report from the City County Board of Health detailing unsanitary conditions at the Children’s Home and declaring the county home well near Chauncey to be unsafe for domestic use unless boiled or chlorinated. The Children’s Home faced dirty facilities, inadequate ventilation and lighting, poor milk handling and insect control, with recommendations for immediate upgrades and a possible move to the Chauncey site. The reports prompted a push to transfer operations while urging rapid improvements if the current home remains. Meanwhile, county bills totaling 12,874.41 were approved, including legal defense costs for a murder trial and road maintenance expenses. A land plot by James F. Bean was also approved as the James F. Bean addition at Verity near The Plains.
