Washington reports government patience as rail stoppage triggers plans for receivership for failing roads. Operators in Ohio and West Virginia push for early settlement and an end to the four month strike through a joint conference with United Mine Workers.
Washington reports that both railroads and shopmen pledge future adherence to railway labor board decisions. President Harding and cabinet regard the peace proposals as a moral victory, even as an immediate settlement of the 800,000 striking shopcraft workers remains distant.
Akron reports that Summit county public schools will not hire any teacher with bobbed hair. County superintendent C A Flickinger says district boards oppose the flapper style and deem it unsuitable for teachers. He cites a rural teacher who lost a job as an example and notes parents regret the return of long skirts.
Lee Hall of Columbus says southern Ohio coal operators will send strong representation to a peace meeting in Cleveland despite the Southern Ohio Coal Exchange refusal. He estimates 85 percent of Ohio mine operators will attend the Cleveland conference.
Federal agents, led by William H. Moran, seized a bakery and butcher shop in Brooklyn where an 80-strong counterfeit operation operated. Police recovered counterfeit fives tens and twenties and an illicit whisky still. All five detainees are Italians found pursuing small income while flaunting diamonds and expensive clothing.

Fort Worth Texas August reports Miss Anne Burnett inherits the bulk of Captain S B Burnetts estate making her the Southwest’s most eligible heiress. The will excludes Tom L Burnett from shares if he contests. Burnetts holdings include three stock ranches, a Fort Worth home two skyscrapers worth 2 million Liberty bonds and substantial stocks and bonds totaling about 15 million dollars. Captain Burnett built vast holdings from 74 years of age, starting on borrowed money and expanding into ranches oil wells and other enterprises.
Fifth fiery cross spotted Wednesday night southeast of the city beyond Stella avenue. Residents saw the blazing outline and speculated it could be a Ku Klux Klan symbol, though officials believe it was a prank by local youths.
Dublin reports Eamonn de Valera urges decisive battle with Free State forces in Clonmel after a war council.
