Washington reports a possible peace break within 48 hours amid renewed talks with President Harding. Key figures B M Jewell and William H Johnston return to press for settlement, while independent brotherhoods threaten to join the walkout if rail conditions do not improve. Senator Cummins moves to compel ICC data.
Labor candidate Charles B. Wood highlights his union record as he campaigns for sheriff ahead of next Tuesday's election urging voters to back his bid.
In Athens County Sheep numbers declined but still profitable say local farmers. Charles Parker of Alexander township kept 110 sheep in winter and averaged 10 pounds of wool per sheep. He bred 57 ewes and raised 53 lambs using the De laine breed. At 48 1 2 cents a pound he earned a good return.
Washington issued general instructions to governors on methods to obtain coal through the federal coal administration. Hoover said federal profiteering prevention at mines is 95 percent efficient. Governors should apply for coal through the federal distributor, avoid outside orders, and prioritize essential use with f o b prices set by producing districts. The ICC moved to have state public service commissions adopt July 25 priority orders.
Athens county war chest board met Friday and ordered payment to American Legion trustees in Athens county. The transfer will occur once unexpended sundry funds within the court order scope are turned in to the board treasurer.
New York reports Miss Dertha Honore 18 the President Crant’s grandniece and Potter Palmer’s niece married last Tuesday in the municipal building to Warwick Ripple 45 a Chicago manufacturer.
The region will have generally fair weather with a chance of showers developing after midweek. Warmer temperatures are possible in southern areas while northern parts remain cooler with light winds and high pressure.
Cleveland reports speed toward a coal wage settlement as unions and operators gather for a joint conference. They expect a 1921 wage basis to resume production, with operators from major fields ready to join and union officials authorized to negotiate quickly. Shipments could resume across the coal fields within days.
A Central News despatch from Rome says about twenty thousand fascists seized Parma and took over the city government. Socialist and Communist elements were expelled from Sampier and Carena as gun battles raged in Milan Genoa and other areas with the gendarmerie said to be almost helpless. Ten deaths were reported around Milan as the crisis deepened and the government struggled to regain control.
Labor remains restive while women voters, an unsettled force for both parties, prepare to nominate candidates for U S senator and governor in Ohio. With nine Republicans vying for the governor nomination, factional splits hinder any solid bloc and portend a varied ticket outcome.
Former Prime Minister Asquith told Oxford audiences that Britain cannot expect the United States to cancel its debt. He cited about 4.3 billion dollars owed with interest and urged voters to face the solid obligations to the United States without fostering false hopes of offsetting assets.
Three leaders of the big four rail brotherhoods telegrammed President Harding in Washington from Cleveland Aug 6 asking for a conference on the railroad shopmen strike. They warned the situation is rapidly worsening and urged an early date to protect their men. The message was signed by Warren S. Slone, W G Lee, and Mr Robinson.
Earl Nice of Big Run and Harry Jackson of Broadwell were wounded in a Friday afternoon duel using a shotgun and revolver. Both men are listed in serious condition but expected to recover. no arrests have been made and authorities are unsure which county the incident occurred in.
A Hong Kong dispatch reports about 5000 people killed in the Swatow typhoon in China. The city is ruined and thousands are homeless. relief supplies have been dispatched.

Staunton Indiana reports actual mining work expected to begin today with eight men fit for work and 26 more arriving. Meanwhile several college graduates arrive as strikebreakers under escort of soldiers through a non military zone to a camp.
The letter from T. L. Morgan explains his campaign position after an ankle injury. It includes a verbatim Athens County Bar Association resolution urging Morgan’s renomination and notes support from judges and local officials. Morgan asserts his expected renomination and pledges continued prompt and efficient service.
Lord Northcliffe the British publisher suffers heart weakness and grew weaker after a poor sleepless night in London. His condition deteriorated as doctors monitor his health on August 5.
Organized labor mobilizes a vast war chest to support railroad shop crafts as Order of Railroad Conductors leaders warn of mass resignations and potential accidents from worn equipment. The plan calls for 80 000 Telegraphers to donate a day’s pay to raise about 300 000 for the strike fund and AFL President Samuel Gompers may urge broader contributions to reach roughly 4 000 000.
In Huntington on August 4 a bolt struck a tree as John Sprow and his young son milked a cow. The lightning knocked the milk bucket ten feet, injuring all three and spooking a nearby cow that kicked over another pail. The cow refused to be milked the next morning, Sprow said.
Preparations completed for the trial of John Wilburn of Logan county for treason linked to last year’s miners march. He is the son of Rev James Wilburn, previously convicted of second degree murder in the march. Other Wilburn sons face indictments. Walter Allen’s treason case to follow. State police continue arrests of indicted miners and hold those captured in Logan jail.
Fremont Ruth of the Hammer club and auctioneers sues May Ruth in the Athens county common pleas court for wilful absence over three years. Previous petitions in 1920 allege adultery and cruelty as the couple, married in April 1919, faced divorce actions that were dismissed.
Paris reports four anarchists arrested at Saarbrucken on suspicion of ties to a German monarchist plot to assassinate Premier Poincare. Suspects are believed linked to the Consuls organization linked to the Rathenau killers.
Judge Joseph W. Horner addressed a small Athena gathering at the county courthouse praising James White head of the Anti Saloon League and urging support for Smith in the governor race. He attacked Bartels for distributing partisan material and highlighted Smith as a strong state official who has saved the state money.
Residents of Jacksonville deny any attempt to prevent Carmi Thompson Republican gubernatorial hopeful from speaking. They say his visit last week was for personal interviews and no public meeting was scheduled.
