Tragedy on Chauncey rails claims Alonzo Shafer life
Alonzo Shafer, 23, employed by HK& M, was killed instantly when struck by an Ohio Central passenger train near Chauncey while working on track ballast with section crews. Engineer Henry Hill warned as the train neared, but Shafer failed to escape. Remains sent to Chauncey. he was a son of William Shafer and a member of the Maccabee lodge.

Athens County Wins Tax Sale Case Victory

A year ago yesterday Athens marked the departure of Company 33 for Chillicothe with a grand sendoff at the B&O depot. Marching drills, cheers, tears, and patriotic music framed the farewell as friends and relatives waved flags while the volunteers boarded the train to Columbus. Several members later served in the Philippines, with Grones dying and Thornton reported killed near Manila though not confirmed.

Death of Alexander Ewing at Court Street Home
Alexander Ewing died suddenly at his home on Court Street Sunday afternoon at about 4 o clock after heart trouble. He would have been 70 next August. Ewing, born August 28, 1834 in Lancaster county, had long served as deputy auditor and as clerk of Athens township. He leaves a wife, two relatives, and no children. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Methodist Church with Odd Fellows assistance.

Leg Amputation After Railway Accident Near Armitage
J C Lewis a brakeman on the KE and M railway was crushed by a freight train at Armitage while attempting to jump aboard. His left leg was amputated at Athens after transfer to W A Lewis's home on Dean avenue. He is 23, a Civil War veteran with service in Cuba, and was returned to Ambrosia West Virginia.

Mrs. Mary Lawson died Wednesday night at 42a o clock at her daughter Mrs. W A Hibbard’s Court Street home after a long illness with catarrial pneumonia. A 4 30 Sunday fire at the Athens Tamber company barn in the town’s west part was quickly extinguished. A tramp is suspected of starting the blaze, causing minor damage. A second alarm at 11 80 Monday morning reported a small blaze in the Crippen property on Mulberry Street occupied by John Bean, with kitchen origin and roof damage. Workmen at a new residence by A L Poston confined the fire, with minor loss.
