Gardener Schroeder Takes Arsenic in Family Row Tragedy
Julius Schroeder a 47 year old German gardener in the farm of Capt. J. B. Allen west of Athens died after ingesting arsenic in a garden dispute with his wife and stepson Claud. A Franco Prussian War veteran, he had been quarrelling over labor with his wife before dawn on Friday and endured hours of agony before death twenty four hours later. His death followed a violent night and a final act of self destruction in the stable. Funeral services were held Sunday at his home with Rev. L. C. Haddox assisting. He leaves a wife and five children, and his work on the farm had made him well known in Athens markets.

Farewell Reception for Dr and Mrs Powell at Presbyterian Church
The Presbyterian church honored long serving pastor Dr. W A Powell and his wife with an elegant farewell reception Tuesday. The church was richly decorated by ladies, Selby's orchestra provided music, and gifts included a ten dollar gold piece from the W C T U and a church gift for Mrs Powell. Dr Powell departs for Toteda to begin new work while Mrs Powell and children plan to move soon.

The Athens county Republican central committee met in the jury room to organize and elect delegates to the judicial and state conventions. All twenty eight members attended except two. They reelected E G Biddison as chairman and H S Nimey as secretary. Delegates to the judicial convention include H G Stalder and others. state convention delegates listed with many names. The meeting endorsed President McKinley and selected a solid delegation for the senatorial race led by H H Wickham.

Death of Mary V Williams at Lysander home
Mary V Williams died Monday at her mother Mrs H J Williams home near Lysander after a period of decline from consumption. She was thirty three years old. Interment occurred at Clark's Chapel yesterday and no funeral services will be held now. A later funeral will be arranged when the circuit pastor is available.

Ball Pups Kill Colt At Farm Near Bower Brothers
Two eight month old bull terrier dogs escaped and attacked a mare and her several weeks old colt in a nearby field. The colt was killed while the mare fought hard, returning to the barn exhausted and foam-covered. Total loss valued at 275 dollars.
