Hoyt S. King, 23, son of S. H. King of Mineral, died after grip and heart and liver trouble. Funeral held Friday at Marshfield M E Church with Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodmen pallbearers. He served in Spanish War with Company B Seventh O W L and was active in Republican politics. His remains were buried in Marshfield cemetery after taps by Bugler Bernard Thompson.
The Pallas club met April 12 at Mrs. Hobson's home. Mrs. Winfield Scott sang a vocal number and two papers were read by Mrs. Moore on Present Ruling Families of Denmark Norway and Sweden and by Miss Rose on Voted Women. Mrs. Sloane led the questions and Miss Weiher reviewed Blenno paasnot. The next meeting will be the annual meeting and officer election at Dr. Edna Thompson's name.
John Shields aged 79, longtime Dover township resident and former Beebe settler, died Monday morning at his son in law Ami Shaffer's home after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at the MLE church tomorrow conducted by Rev L M Baker of the Athena circuit. Interment will be in Wye cemetery.
Judge Festus H. Walters of Circleville, Republican, won the nomination for circuit judge in the Fourth Judicial District on the sixty first ballot after a spirited contest. Four candidates competed including Judge Sibley of Washington, Judge Mauck, and Judge Nuby. Walters secured broad support from Pickaway County lawyers and party delegates amid a push for a younger, capable jurist.
Grace Price of Athens and Blonde LeRow of Parkersburg plus their companions began a Sunday celebration that spilled into the Lancaster Street Catholic cemetery. Police stopped the spree with arrests. LeRow jailed after a ride in an improvised patrol wagon. Price later nabbed near the Hocking Valley bridge. Both women faced drunken and disorderly conduct charges, with LeRow and Price sentenced to 30 days and fines.
Manering and Bell escaped after a chase by Policeman Lowry from Armntage to a distant point. Henry Faught and his brother Herbert were arrested at Hill's restaurant near the B and O depot for drinking and disorderly conduct. Henry fined twenty dollars plus costs, Herbert required to pay due and costs.
A long nomination speech from 1903 praises Gen. Charles II Grosvenor of Athens as a capable, faithful Republican with broad experience. The speaker lauds his defense of miners and farmers, support for McKinley era policies, and loyalty to the party as he seeks another term representing Meigs County and the eleventh district in Congress.
The eleventh annual training conference for newly elected presidents of college Y M C A chapters in Ohio opened in Athens with about sixty presidents and delegates. Dr Emory Hunt and Harry Hicks addressed attendees, followed by technical sessions, a social reception, and a baseball game between the college Y M C A team and the university team.
The Monday council meeting adjourned after a long wind-jamming session on granting S L McCane permission to add a story to the City News Depot building on Court Street. The special committee endorsed municipal ownership of the Hight plant and proposed a mass meeting to discuss city ownership.
Some twenty eight assessors gathered at the auditor's office to receive blanks and instruction. They will canvass taxpayers in the next thirty days to determine property values and set listing rules. The Alderman-Layrence building on Court is being torn down to make room for a handsome brick structure. Foundation work starts immediately. F E Goldsberry vacated his residence portion and moved to the Moore property on Congress. Jr Higgins moved his office to the Rosch building west of Warren's livery stable on Washington. The Athens Journal occupies the Roach building on South Court Street.
The corner stone of the new Presby terian church will be laid Thursday afternoon April 24 at 1 45. Notables joining the pastor include Dr J J McNeir of Washington D D, Dr W B Roe of Ninketts, Dr Henry Ramer of Parkersburg, Dr H J Steward of Logan, Dr Thomas Trumbull of Pomemy, Dr Charlce Taylor of StcArthur. Special church choir music will be provided with Selby's orchestra.
Dr Warren V Sprague of Athens county completed a four year medical course at Sterling Medical College Columbus and received his diploma with many graduates. He is son of Mr and Mrs L A Sprague of Airfield and brother of Dr W T Sprague of Chauncey.
LMMR, working at the brick plant, was caught in a shafting on Monday afternoon. He suffered painful bruises and a sprain, and his trousers and underwear were torn. He was taken home on State Street by cab and is expected to recover in a few days.
John Farrell was taken to a Columbus hospital late last week for treatment of injuries suffered weeks earlier in an encounter with Charles Wisley of Chauncey. Farrell's condition is described as serious.
