The cotton crop, though late, has begun moving. About one hundred bales reached the Athens market with hot weather likely to push more on soon. Prices hover around eleven cents, with market sentiment expecting ten to eleven cents for a period.
Lucy Cobb Institute prepares to open for the fall session with Mia Lipscomb and a corps of teachers. Students are arriving, and many are expected from Atlanta Savannah and Macon. Mrs Lipscomb anticipates large delegations from those cities to attend the opening. Hood's Sarsaparilla touted as a tonic for appetite and sleep.
A dense sale notice lists cut prices on quilts napkins towels table linens and dress remnants with discounts up to one third and one fourth. It promotes new lace curtains window shades and a line of Queen Quality shoes along with tailor suits for ladies. Hosiery wool dress goods and fabrics are featured with emphasis on early buying and stock stockouts. Sale placed by B. R. Palmer & Son and W. J. Smith & Bro.
The article recalls Miss Catherine E. Brewer later Mrs. Brewer Benson, as the first woman worldwide to graduate from a chartered women’s college on July 18, 1840 at the Georgia Female College, later Wesleyan Female College, now widely known in the South. It notes her eighty first birthday, her Macon residence, and the surviving original diploma detailing the degree conferred by the institution with signatures of the president and faculty.
Dr Isaac S Hopkins returns to the pulpit at the First Methodist church on Sunday morning. A large turnout of life members and visiting church members attended as he preached on Job illustrating Christian endurance through trials. His health has improved and his summer vacation aided recovery. Also notice: Saturday September 26 is the final day to buy $100 bottles for 350 of Globs Tonics.
On account of other business, Edward Glaser offers all fixtures of the Athenian Market for sale at once. Captain Harold Ketron declares Georgia will fields a strong South ern Intercollegiate team this season. He notes the squad will be heavier, averaging near 18 pounds on the line, with two 190 pound recruits and a former Virginia Tech quarterback set to enroll. Ketron, 190 pounds himself, will anchor center and plans to begin preparations soon.
Mr E A Daniel of Washington Street brought a curiosity to the Banner office a giant hen egg containing a second perfect egg inside it. The interior egg was four and a half inches in circumference though no separate yolk was present. A similar double egg had appeared years ago, with a central inner egg as large as a goose egg.
Bishop Ford McMillan of the Christian Alliance preached a sermon of rare interest at Oconee Street Methodist Church Sunday night. Mr McMillan formerly lived in Athens and has many friends in the area who welcome him. A large crowd attended the service.
A called morning meeting attended by Mayor Pro Tem Rocker and Aldermen O'Farrell Weatherford Von derau Cooteen Lipscomb Foater considered a duplicate main from the waterworks to Cleveland avenue. The resolution, adopted unanimously, directs the city engineer and waterworks superintendent to proceed with economy and buy parts for the duplicate section. Clerk W. W. Turner notes the action and a separate notice announces music classes starting September 7, 1903 taught in Lenchetizky method by Mabel and Edith Hodgson.
Laura Hitherford Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy will meet Thursday afternoon at 5 30 at Mrs M W Stovall's Millgeave Road residence. Plan for an entertain ment fundraiser will be discussed. All members urged to attend.
Clerks UO. C Fuller and W. Corcter of the Federal Court visited Athens to check urgent matters. No cases required immediate action, so they scheduled October Ish for another visit to set trial dates. Judge Newmar may call a special term in Athens on that date.
Mr Alvin L Brooke of 805 Lumpkie street suffered persistent indigestion. After trying remedies including Globe Tonic he claims a four pound gain in the Gret week, attributing his improvement to a tonic sold at 45540 Clayton Street.
An early stage foundry and machine shop is planned at the center by local young men. It will start small but aims for unqualified success, with Bucklen's Arnica Salve advertised for wide use and as a cure for various skin ailments available for 25 cents at W. J. Smith & Bro and H. R Palmer & Son.
Sunday at the YMCA men’s meeting Dr W P Lovejoy delivered a splendid talk titled The Light That Never Fails. Interest in these meetings grows and fall attendance is expected to be large.
A German woman traveled ten miles to obtain a package of Postum. Her letter says coffee caused heart trouble, headaches, and dizziness, while Postum improved her health and her husband’s headaches. The family now drinks Postum twice daily. Look for a copy of The Road to Wellville in each package.
The State Normal School Department of Manual Arts has produced a neat bulletin led by Prof. F. J. Orr with Miss Annie Linton as assistant. It explains aims, work sidelights, and planned projects for the year, citing the school’s progress and top instruction, with bulletins to be distributed across the state to boost interest. A separate note features a testimonial about Kodol Dyspepsia Care, praised by Judge W. T. Holland for curing indigestion and improving sleep. sold by all druggists.
Bransford's Clifton Flour marketed for family use and bakery needs. The Wingfield Cash Grocery advertises regular stock of fresh Clifton flour for bread pastry and cake, noting it is sold only to retail merchants and kept fresh through small-quantity purchases.
The Sarepta Baptist association plans its Elberton meeting on the 22nd instant. The First Baptist church of the city names Messrs. S. M. Herrington, George O. Thomas, T. J. Mell, J. D. Mell, W. P. Vonderal, G. H. Hulme, W. B. Jackson and Dr. W. H. Young as messengers to represent the church.
City council action orders immediate duplicate main construction from pumping station to Cleveland avenue and pipe fixes from power house to main. engineer reports pipe stock. right of way along Southern railroad to be secured. work to start within days with minimal delay. aims to reduce water system risk and eliminate T joints for better flow.
Deputy Collector H. L. Richardson of Gainesville has been made division deputy in place of E. L Bergstrom. Bergstrom becomes raiding deputy collector, a position previously held by Richardson. Bergstrom will maintain Athens as his headquarters.

John Brown, a colored man, is jailed on a serious assault charge after a warrant sworn by Mentary Bullock, a young black girl. The alleged crime occurred on Clayton Street near Thomas Street Saturday night. Brown denies the accusation.
