Coal rate meeting to discuss Athens freight relief

Clarke County Commissioners Cut Tax Rate and Retire Bonds
Clarke County reduced the tax levy by fifteen percent at a Tuesday meeting and retired a one thousand dollar road improvement bond. Sales of old courthouse property will retire twenty thousand dollars in bonds, leaving ten thousand dollars for other needs. Officials expect faster retirement of court house bonds under the new rate, with sufficient funds to cover interest. The county stays prosperous as taxpayers’ interests are guarded, while nearby Richmond County raised its rate to 5.70 per thousand. Clarke County remains the leader among allied counties in the state.

Remarkable record of a veteran whose death occurred this week
Yesterday morning on the 5 o clock train for Atlanta the remains of Mr. W H Foster were taken to Alabama for burial. The funeral party reached Roanoke Alabama last night and services will be held in the Wealaki church this afternoon. He was seventy seven years ten months and twenty nine days old and had suffered intermittent health issues since the Civil War. He supported twelve children and saw all reach adulthood and marry. He served four years in the army, was a Primitive Baptist and a Mason.
