In the year just passed Athens built 132 new houses while city tax assessors completed ten days of service at city hall, noting a total assessment rise to 353,700.00 dollars. The builders were not costly homes, but a strong increase in housing pressuring the city for moderate residences. Uncle Willis Jones Hailed in Athens as 100th Year Tribute
Rev. Willis A. Jones known as Uncle Willis or Father Jones died after a three week illness. Born February 28 1814 in Jones County Georgia he came to Athens in 1844 and was ordained in 1874. He organized the First Union League and advocated education for colored people.
