Clay Would Tax All Mortgages in Georgia

Special to Banner-Herald. Senator Herbert Clay will author a bill to tax all mortgages in Georgia. The plan proposes a twenty cents per hundred dollar levy collected by the superior court clerk at recording and a one percent clerk’s fee. Quarterly reports would go to the comptroller general, with funds remitted to the state treasury. If enacted, the measure could yield about one million dollars annually. The tax would be annual at twenty five cents per hundred, with mortgage validity contingent on payment. Senator Cleo discussed the proposal informally with many senators and representatives who voiced support.
