J D Applewhite reports defects in 75 percent of 1219 children
Dr. J D Applewhite, county health commissioner, told the board of education that in 1219 children examined across Baxter Childs College Nantahala and Oconee street schools about 75 percent showed physical defects. Teetth eyes throat nutrition and heart were major issues with 697 bad teeth 330 throat defects 216 eye problems 42 nose problems and 575 nutrition or heart defects. Underweight also common, especially at College Avenue, where 131 children were affected. milk was provided at recess and 55 underweights at College Avenue were corrected. The report noted dental clinic progress and overall improvements since 1921.
