Columbus to Own Electric Light Plant

Columbus Georgia council passed an ordinance to issue 100000 in bonds to build and operate an electric light plant owned by the city. Efforts to reduce electric rates mirror Atlanta’s recent success. Bond issue is assured.

Georgia railroad grading work begins near Statesboro

Contract work on the Savannah Augusta and Northern line starts three miles north of Statesboro with 140 teams and 200 men. The route will run from Savannah through Augusta Washington Athens to Chattans Town, funded by J Lynn of New York who is optimistic about rapid completion.

Georgia mill men back immigration drive in Columbus

At the Georgia Industrial Association convention in Warm Springs, about sixty cotton manufacturers endorsed efforts to attract European emigrants to Georgia. President Dr. Jefferson Davis led reports. officers were re elected and the immigration push received unanimous backing.

Barr Takes Charge of Jamestown Exposition Project

At Norfolk on June 19 the Jamestown Exposition Co directors accepted Gov. Cottrells resignation and named James M Barr director general with full powers. They approved a second 700000 bonus issue to cover liabilities via a second mortgage bearing 6 percent for twenty years from 1907 and pledged fast construction toward completion in three weeks with Athens and Anderson contributing nearby.

Georgia Carolina Railway plan to extend from Hartwell to Anderson

Prominent citizens from Athens, Anderson and Hartwell meet to organize a permanent company for a new line from Hartwell to Anderson and Hartwell to Atlanta. Judge W L Hodges leads the effort, charter offered, stock subscriptions soon sought to fund the project and expand local trade.

Porter Jones Arrested for Killing Adams in Putnam County

Eatonton June 19 Porter Jones and Albert Jones are jailed over the shooting death of Robert F Adams. Albert nears an alibi while Porter confesses claiming insults spurred the act. The committal trial will begin soon with John R Coopery hired for the defense.
