The forest service outlines ten commandments for windbreaks used by plains farmers. It urges dedicating 1/8 to 1/5 of land to timber, planting rapid growers with slower undergrowth, combining evergreens for winter protection, proper spacing, thick lower growth, careful cultivation, and restrained grazing and thinning to improve timber tracts.
