In Atlanta a joint committee report favoring the McMichael bill follows county superintendents in Athens. The measure would levy a one mill tax next year to pay common school teachers and begin a second year with another mill as needed. If defeated, a bond issue of one million dollars would be sought to fund teachers and stabilize school finances.
Street car No. 28 operated by motor man Ralph Smith and conductor Darden jumped the track at night, crashed into the yard of Austin Comer on Barber Street, stopped three feet from the porch, then backed onto the track after hours. Earlier the same car derailed two trucks at the Holman building corner but was soon re-railed.
A young Athens man visits an enlistment station in Macon and opts to enlist for education and government support. In Indianapolis he endures hazing and watches army life up close, then declines the oath and returns home seeking funds to return to Athens, avoiding the uniform and glory.
Forecast through Thursday evening calls for fair weather in Atlanta and surrounding areas with local showers expected across Georgia. Recent showers were reported in Atlanta and Birmingham and along the Atlantic coast from Charleston to Hatteras. Charleston measured 1.00 inches and Wilmington 1.26 inches. A western disturbance brought light rain to the upper Mississippi valley with a slight low in Nebraska and Iowa. St. Paul saw a 1.52 inch fall.
Senator R T DuBose helped restore $15000 from the state college of agriculture funding and push for the full $100000 maintenance appropriation in the general appropriations bill. Clarke county and educational institutions praise his work as beneficial to Clarke county's interests and Georgia's educational needs.
Archie Wingfield elder son of the late Judge S B Wingfield died last night at 9 45 at his home 159 Virginia avenue after a kidney ailment. He leaves a wife three children and a large surviving family. Funeral Friday at 10 from Baptist Tabernacle with Rev R E Neighbour. interment at Oconee cemetery. He was connected with Wingfield Grocery and well known in Athens.

In Atlanta the movement to unite the Georgia Experiment Station with the State College of Agriculture at Athens advances in the general assembly. It seeks land sale near Griffin and moving the plant to Athens to avoid losing the $30,000 federal grant, with the state unable to raise funds to maintain the station independently. The federal government signals preference for a college of agriculture management and warns the grant could be withdrawn if expenses are misused. A $7,500 need remains unfunded in the current appropriation.
Joe L. Deadwyler a prominent Athens attorney drafted a proposed measure for a commission form of city government. Representative Frank Rhodes will introduce the bill and push for its passage.
The Athens district Methodist conference opened in Sharon Georgia with Emory College president and alumni present. Today trustees may vote on resolutions about Emory ball playing, pitting Bishop Candler Asa Candler against inter scholastic athletics versus proponents urging athletic privilege for students.
Aaron Cohen of the Charles Stern Co. leaves for Baltimore New York and other eastern markets to acquire a full stock for the firm. Cohen aims to meet trade needs and, with a fifty year standing, will debut season offerings soon. Mrs Stern accompanies him to New York and Atlantic City where they plan to stay until early September. Cohen will be absent several weeks.
The funeral for 24 year old Mr John Sharpton was held yesterday at the Otonee Street Methodist Church. He died Tuesday afternoon at his home on Oconee Street after several days illness and was buried in Oconee Cemetery.
The Barrow bill with Winder as capital moved forward as the senate committee backed its passage after favorable house action. A strong house vote preceded, and the measure faces likely senate approval and a people’s vote at the next election as a constitutional amendment. Committee vote was 8 to 3.
The Owls club faced a Mayors Court conviction for selling near beer without a license. Witnesses testified non members bought near beer in club rooms, and that membership was small. The mayor fined $50 and ordered the place closed to selling or keeping near beer on hand.
Representative Rhodes of Clarke county introduces a bill to abolish the present county commissioners and create a new elected by the people board. Current pay is seventy two dollars yearly. grand jury election has hindered finding good men. Opponents urge public scrutiny before the senate committee if the bill passes the house.
Athens shows little sign of seeking the Georgia Experiment Station relocation from Griffin to Athens despite Griffin’s eagerness to keep it. Chancellor Barrow and Spalding county's representatives report no backing for a move. The appropriations committee took no action on 10,500 to reimburse the federal government for two station barns, though passage is expected.
In Atlanta on July 16 the appropriations committee approved restoring the State College of Agriculture at Athens to a $100,000 maintenance fund with $15,000 set for expanding corn club work. Additional appropriations favor the Augusta Medical College at $30,000 and Milledgeville Sanitarium at $30,000 with $10,000 available in 1914 and $20,000 in 1915.
Mt. Vernon Masonic lodge holds a called communication this evening at 8:30 to confer the F C degree. All qualified members are invited to attend.

Autoists are asked to keep noise to a minimum on Oconee street near the bridge as Mrs Haudrup, an aged lady, lies very ill at her home. Yesterday evening the infant child of Mr and Mrs J G Brown was buried with many friends attending the services.
Yesterday afternoon on Herty Field the Pound team defeated the Railroad crew five to two. Brown and Peacock pitched for Pounders with Hutchins catching, while Fluker and Pittard pitched for the Railroad. Fluker's support faltered at times and First Baseman Bacon was injured after a collision with Weatherly, suffering a blow to the head and temporary breath loss.
Classic City Council No. 315 U C T plans a barbecue at Tibbetts Park this Saturday July 19 at 5 o'clock p m. Proceeds go to fund lodge activities and community service.
The Creswell Cadets of the colored Knights of Pythias in Athens won first prize in the state drill at Brunswick. Twenty four boys drilled by A. F. Hawkins represented Athens as nearly a hundred from the city attended the grand judging.
