A late general assembly act changes pension payments for Civil War veterans. Beginning in 1808 pensioners over fifty dollars yearly are paid quarterly on March first June first September first and December tenth. Those under fifty dollars receive their full annual amount on March first. The state now issues the full sum in one payment to ordinary draws instead of individual checks.
The officers of the First Partist church and Sunday school for the ensuing year have been named. Clerk E. B. Mell, Assistant Clerk H. P. Lawrence, Treasurer E. H. Dorsey, Superintendent Sunday School John A., Assistant Superintendent Sunday School G. H. Hulme. Both church and Sunday school outline condition and work for the year.
The Athens dispensary posted sales of 1635.10 yesterday, slightly under Thursday’s total. Stock is nearly exhausted and by Tuesday night most brands will be gone. operations are to end then with the shop closing permanently thereafter.

Walter E. Perry, a white man, swore out a warrant for Joe Warren charging assault and battery after a Wednesday incident on Clayyton Street left Perry with a broken collar bone. Warren was arrested and awaits a preliminary trial once Perry can attend.
The Athens Fire Department reports a near record low total loss for the year 1907, with one large exception. The McConnell Belt and Leather Company plant fire early in the year caused the higher total, but the department is credited with swift, effective response to a difficult blaze.
The University Savings Bank of this city publishes its statement of condition for December 1 listing capital stock at $10,000 and profits totaling nearly $30,000 since inception. Officers are praised for their attentive management and the bank’s admirable performance.
Yesterday morning the remains of Mrs D R Hester who died at her home on Thursday were carried to Siloam Green county for interment. A large group of friends gathered at the Jackson street residence before the body was taken to the depot. The death is mourned by many in the city.
The Sunday school room at the First Methodist church is being equipped with a handsome new piano, ready for use at tomorrow’s services. Improvements continue in the department as Superintendent Chancellor David C. Barrow leads the work to enhance Sunday school facilities.
