Athens chamber of commerce plans a slogan contest to select a short three word phrase to blaze on the city water tower. The chosen slogan will be visible for miles at night and promote Athens as a city of enterprise and progress.
The Athens business scene shows progress with new buildings under construction and rising real estate activity. Pinkassohn Cigar Co. reports strong first year. remodels include a pool hall on Clayton street. Nearby, faculty members Brooks Geissler Hendren plan early fall homes on Morris street. Building lots shift hands on Meigs and Woodlawn avenues as Huggins & Son advances a three story Broad street crockery store.
Fewer marriage licenses were issued to white couples in July in Athens Clarke County than in any month in fifteen years. Only three white couples obtained licenses to wed, while the colored population activity is noted but not fully disclosed in the fragment.
The record shows monthly alcohol prescriptions for the town with Palmer's pharmacy receiving the most in several months. June and May totals shift among Orr's Citizens' and Warren Smith & Bro, while July lists numerous physicians and counts by name for writt en scripts.

The house passed measures to create the City Recorder office for the police court and to establish a commission form of city government with a public vote on adoption. A bill to aid Rev S J Cartledge for damages near Mitchells bridge was sent to the senate but committee recommended not pass.
Madison County superior court in Danielsville hears murder arson and assault cases during a hot weather term. Jake Kimball convicted of murder and sentenced to twelve years. W W Barnett found guilty of stabbing an educator with fines set. Arson trials involve Dr Deadwyler’s barn attack with a white defendant and two Black defendants. Judge Meadow to continue, Judge Thomas among defense and prosecution counsel. Local ads follow.
The University of Georgia summer session stands at five hundred seventy enrollments with many teachers and trainees preparing for today’s state board exam for teaching certificates. Last year’s total was three hundred fifty three, marking a rise of two hundred seventeen and just over sixty percent.
In Clarke County during July no lunacy case was tried in the court of ordinary. The month shows a rare lull with few marriages and lunacy trials, a pattern noted across years. Of five trials this year only three involved new cases, with two already committed to the state sanitarium and treated.

Fire crews battled fumes, cut holes in walls, and attempted resuscitation without success as coroner's inquest was scheduled.
Atlanta July 31 The house appropriations committee lopped 110000 from the bill then added 15000. Cuts included 50000 from the common school fund and 50000 from the pension. Other changes raised amounts for the State Normal School at Athens and the Georgia Normal and Industrial, while boosting the State Sanitarium and vaccine program. Senate plans to resist and expect heated floor fights over medical college and normal school funding.
Russell Daniel of the American State Bank clerical force began a two week vacation biking from Athens with a strapped suitcase. He rode toward Lynchburg Virginia then Charlottesville Washington Baltimore Philadelphia and finally New York following the national highway.
A fierce electrical storm swept Atlanta as the Frank trial proceeded and the baseball game continued, with Atlanta winning. Lightning struck Terminal station causing minor damage. A bolt killed one young girl. no other fatalities reported.
At a July meeting of the general agricultural committee number two the removal of the experiment station was raised. Senator Searcy and Spalding representatives opposed moving the station to a South Georgia site. The committee postponed the decision to Tuesday to hear the South Georgia relocation proposal and consider the Wilkes option.
County representatives discuss relocating the station to the college farm at Athens with a plan to create a sub-station at Tifton, seen as a strategic move.
Georgia legislators may pay Crankshaw Jewelry of Atlanta the $1,300 owed since 1907 for a state silver service presented to the battleship Georgia. Representative John Y. Smith of Fulton filed a resolution asking payment if the treasury can provide funds.
