Colonel George Goethals, governor of the Canal Zone, issued orders placing the zone on a strict war footing. Soldiers were ordered to patrol all canal locks and lock operation machinery was secured with keys in Goethals's possession.
United States charge at Mexico City, Nel ?' son O'Shaughneezy, arrived Vera Cruz tonight amid sparse details. Officials provided no further information on his safety or status as of arrival.
Seven American prisoners and Mexican soldiers are held at Cordoba or Orizaba on the Vera Cruz line with four Americans possibly facing execution. Four were taken from a Tierra Blanca train on the Vera Cruz and Isthmus line, and three others near Motolzonga, including Americans and Englishmen. The first official Vera Cruz casualty tally reported 125 killed and 195 wounded.

The informal inquiry, attended by the public and 20 witnesses, found Brooks sober and active in directing firemen, with supporters applauding the verdict.
