West Virginia moonshining raid leaves Doc York wounded

J N York of Neverfail farm learns his brother Doc York age 38 was shot near Pulaski West Virginia while raiding a moonshine outfit. Doc York acting deputy sheriff and another officer returned fire from ambush and three bullets hit him. One leg shattered required amputation at the Ince.

Pendleton Legion Drum Corps Dance At Athena

The Pendleton American Legion drum corps sponsored a Tuesday dance at Athena Legion hall. The corps led a street parade in red and tan uniforms before the event. Mletcher's orchestra provided the music and introduced many attractive features. A fair sized crowd attended.

Miss Rodman Heads to Seattle For University Summer School

Miss Dorothy Rodman who has assisted in correcting state examination papers leaves this weekend for Eugene to visit her brother and friends in Salem before continuing studies at the University of Washington summer school in Seattle.

Entertain With Dinner at Koepke Ranch

A Walla Walla party dined at the Koepke ranch south of Athena on Friday night. After dinner, seven bridge tables were in play with Miss Thelma Thompson of Pendleton and Mr. Bert Krause of Walla Walla high scorers. Legion members later paid a charivari to the Koepkes, and earlier the group visited Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris to pay compliments.

Old Clubfoot the Grizzly Fallen to Camp's Rifle

31 Years Ago May 15 1596 reports the famous grizzly known as Old Clubfoot killed by Camp's rifle as civilization expands. Bears are common in eastern Wallowa county and this one preyed on settlers cattle for years. It was said he could drag a 1200 pound steer with ease.
