Prairie States Swept by Tornadoes and Storms

Prairie states faced a catastrophic toll with over 200 dead and 600+ injured from a weekend of tornadoes and storms. Arkansas Missouri Texas and Illinois suffered extensive property losses as towns like Poplar Bluff and areas around St. Louis endured multiple fatalities. Death tolls across counties include 70 in Arkansas, 73 in Missouri, 33 in Texas, with hundreds more injured and widespread homelessness.

Indorse Idaho North and South Rail Line move grows

In Portland Oregon a coalition of Idaho Washington and Oregon officials and civic leaders formed to urge the Interstate Commerce Commission to order the Union Pacific system to build a water grade rail connection between Homestead Oregon and Lewiston Idaho. A multi state public service commission effort will push the complaint before the commission with the support of Washington Idaho and Oregon committees and a 29 member delegation.

Pioneer Farmer John Gordon Dies After Illness

John Gordon 71, a Couse Creek district pioneer farmer, died Saturday at his son's home north of Athena after a long illness. He had lived in Spokane in recent years and was born in Ohio in 1866. Big Four baseball league organized in Walla Walla

The Big Four league was organized Wednesday in Walla Walla with teams from Helix Milton Freewater Electric Supply and Fixtures of Walla Walla and Weston. Charles Hendricks of Walla Walla was elected president and Robert Reynolds of Weston secretary treasurer. The league opens Sunday afternoon with Milton Freewater at Weston and Walla Walla at Helix.

Potts Pioneer Farmer Dies at 67 in Pendleton

William E. Potts a longtime Helix area farmer died Friday night at St Anthony's hospital Pendleton after a long illness with kidney disease. Born in McIntyre Ontario he moved to Umatilla county at 22 and helped Caledonian picnics at Athena. Survived by widow and one son. brother of the late James Potts. Funeral at Pendleton Presbyterian church, interment Weston.

Umatilla Baptist Association Holds Annual Meeting

The twenty second annual meeting of the Umatilla County Baptist Association will convene in Hermiston on May 15 16. Athena Baptist church receives two program numbers. Mrs E M Bollinger will discuss How the Women's Missionary Society Benefits the Local Church. Charles Betts will respond to the welcome. Nevada Officials Under Embezzlement Charge Case

Nevada state treasurer Ed Malley ex-state controller George Cole and ex-cashier WH Clapp were jailed on embezzlement charges. Investigators say they devised a large scheme, moving 516822.16 through fictitious cashier’s checks via Carson Valley bank to the state treasury. Arrest followed a gubernatorial warrant and bank transactions through tax and fee collections.

Highway Chairman Sues For Records In State Supreme Court

Olympia, May 20. The state highway committee faces a mandamus action in the state supreme court brought by the attorney general against Governor Harley and State Highway Engineer Humes. The suit seeks access to books, records, papers, minute books and unopened bids, alleging removal of May 2 minute and contractor bids. The attorney general and Donley will represent the highway committee.
