Clark county Sheriff Lester M. Wood was shot and killed during a gun battle with moonshiners in a wooded Dole valley area northeast of Vancouver. Deputy Johnson fired toward the shooter, and a posse captured Ted Baker and the Baker brothers and Lester Hunting. Wood had begun a crackdown on liquor violators after taking office January 10.

Rain Threatens New Flood as Rescues Continue
The New Orleans weather bureau estimates flood surface along Begg to Melville at about 42 feet above mean gulf level and still rising slowly. About 100 miles west of New Orleans the Atchafalaya flood waters flow toward Bayou des Glasses, 170 miles northwest of the city. Residents along the lower Atchafalaya are being rescued by small boats while others seek safety on levees after the first surge.

Explosion at Banister ranch leaves man fatally burned
