Endorse Free Bridge Plan for $750000 Across Missouri

The Chamber of Commerce bridge committee unanimously approved sending a new proposal to railroads to build a toll free bridge over the Missouri at a cost of $750,000 to be funded and maintained by the railroads. Title to the bridge would be held by Atchison and Buchanan County, with a three‑way contract covering financing and liability. The plan aims to replace the antiquated crossing and save railroads from current tolls of about $122,000 annually. A tentative site near the old White Clay creek mouth was chosen, with safeguards to prevent local cost liability.
