Atchison Youth Alfred Harwi Dies In Plane Crash

Alfred Harwi an eighteen year old Atchison native dies after a plane crash near Lawrence. Companions Lewis Hardman and pilot John Maxwell are seriously injured. Harwi a Kansas University student and Phi Gamma Delta member, was described as bright and well liked. The trio were returning from a flight when control was lost at about 300 feet. Maxwell is Kansas City based veteran pilot. the plane was owned by Dr. Lawrence Wassman. Harwi leaves parents two brothers and a sister. funeral plans pending.

Troy Dentist J C Myers Retires After Long Career

Dr J C Myers retires from active dentistry in Troy after a career spanning from 1865 in Ulrichsville Ohio to Troy Kansas. Born August 4 1844 he served as a Civil War fifer before settling in Troy in 1878. He and his family contributed to church and community life and will remain in Troy.

Death of Mrs. Tom Burchett at 506 South Fourth

Mrs. Tom Burchett 62 died at 7:30 am at her home following two weeks of double pneumonia. Born in Leavenworth in 1866, she moved to Atchison as a bride. Survived by four children Helen Smith Ona Ritchie Isabell Huntington Tommy Burchett, four grandchildren, sister Ida Gorham, brothers John and Fred Hutchinson. Funeral Sunday 2:30 pm at Harcuff with Rev. Wheeler. burial Oak Hill cemetery.

Atchison High School to award 98 diplomas in May

Ninety eight graduates will receive diplomas at Atchison High School with fifty seven girls and forty one boys to walk the memorial half evening of May 5. Bishop E L Waldorf will give the commencement address and the baccalaureate sermon will be by Rev E F Hofer May 20. The class includes Marian Berger and Robert Binkley among many others.

Mrs E F Duncan dies after ten week illness

Mrs E F Duncan, 70, died at her South Fourth street home yesterday afternoon from angina pectoris after a ten week bedfast illness. She came to Atchison from Rule Nebraska in 1915 and built many friendships. Surviving are her husband, six children, a brother, and numerous relatives. Funeral set for 2:30 PM tomorrow at the Christian church with Rev M O Kellison officiating. Burial in Mt Vernon cemetery. Lawin & Douglass in charge.

Death of Mrs S O Daniels Remains to Return Home

Ward reports the death of Mrs S O Daniels, 34, a former Beanlake area resident, in a Colorado Springs sanitarium after years of ill health. She was married in 1915 to Mr Daniels, mother of a 6 year old daughter Marjorie, and survived by two sisters Ulah Jackson of Kansas City and Mrs Tom Spencer of Sugar City, Colorado. The body will arrive in Atchison tomorrow and be taken to the Beanlake area home. funeral plans are not yet set.

County to Build New Route Connecting With 14th Street Viaduct

Atchison county plans immediate concrete paving from end of current road to Omaha Junction on state highway No. 4 to form a southwest gateway. The program includes repaving from Waggener farm to Monrovia road, paving from Nigger hill to Omaha Junction, and a new southern entrance from Omaha Junction to the Fourteenth street viaduct. Surveys start next week, with state highway commission review May 21. An old offer to pave Harmony Garden to Omaha Junction remains, under the five-eighths mile law, if the city will also back improvements beyond the junction. The project aims to end long deadlocks and boost Atchison’s image. Also noted: Emil Ebner and family visiting from Ann Arbor, and deputy game warden William Hartman Jr. making a light personal note about a reported guarding position.
