New York Editors Fight Press Agent Hoaxes
New York editors have battled three plausible canards on front pages as hoaxes spread. The pieces targeted a royal daughter, a dawn death in Central Park, and a late night club battle, showing how press agents profit from sensationalism. The piece notes there are few laws to shield papers and that journalists risk job loss from such schemes. It also mentions famous hoaxes like Anna Held’s milk bath and Mrs. Pat Campbell, and cites a Broadway film link to Tarzan.
