Atchison Building Shows Gain over 1926 totals

1927 building permits in Atchison reached 99 with $319,071 in improvements, up from 1926 totals of $276,748 for the same permit count. City manager A W Leng disclosed the figures and Frank J Roth Jr building inspector reported inspections across electrical plumbing flues and sanitary work, underscoring enforcement of the building code to improve fire safety and sanitation.

Buzz Saw Injuries Fatal Risk in Rushville Area

William Gardner, 50, of Rushville, badly injured when a buzz saw pulled by a tractor threw him eight feet landing head first in the tractor. He suffered concussions, multiple fractures and severe facial injuries. he was unconscious at 2:30 pm and taken to St Joseph's hospital. Gardner, married with 10 children, is a cousin of A Gardner and L S Gardner.

Atchison Robberies Reported At Two Stores

Two Atchison shops were robbed overnight. Arensberg Grocery at Tenth and Main lost 4 in cash two cakes and a loaf of bread after a rear window break in. Kohler Shoe Co saw entry via back window bars. one pair high boots and ten pennies missing. A patrolman found the damaged window around 11:30 p m. and alerted authorities.

Troy to Install a Water Works Plant

The Troy city council hires R. O. Joslyn of Layne Western Pump Co. to drill test holes for water. Engineers will await results. Other items note illnesses and local plans from North Twelfth street to Memorial Hall floor work, garden plantings, and community notices.

Mrs. A. E. Huff of near Lancaster dies

Mrs. A E Huff prominent Lancaster resident dies at home at 9 45 pm after a malignant stomach growth. Born September 20 1865 in Clark County Missouri she lived in Doniphan and later Lancaster. Survived by husband daughter Violet Loyd siblings and nieces and nephews funeral at home with burial in Lancaster cemetery.

Atchison Fire Losses Decline In 1927 Record

Fire department logged 214 runs in 1927 with 70 property loss incidents. Total damage reached $25,308, down from $62,000 in 1926, not including the Blair elevator fire. Causes included leaves burning, defective flues, coal oil stoves, and spontaneous combustions totaling $9,268.95 in damages. Local officials called the year's low losses a tribute to the department's efficiency.

Valley Falls-Effingam County Road Plan Before Officials

Fred Kellar and E. F. Garbe appeared before Jefferson county commissioners Monday to push a county operated road from Valley Falls to Effingham. The proposed route would run north from Valley Falls past two school houses to Sugar Bowl on the county line, avoiding steep grades and two dangerous rail crossings on alternative routes. Decision pending.
