First exclusive wholesale firm in Atchison led by Bartholow Bros
FE W Howe notes Bartholow Bros established Atchison’s first exclusive jobbing house in 1862 with partners Theo Bartholow and T J Bartholow. The firm sold $60,000 tobacco to Bartholow and B W Lewis & Bros for Salt Lake stores, stored in Atchison, then doubled profits after taxes. Bartholow predicted John J Ingalls would reach US Senate, a forecast tied to Ingalls’ 1866 welcome address. Bartholow later moved to St Louis and Jewell City, engaging in banking and grain business.
