County High Cants Move Toward Bonded New Building
Atchison county community high school board held a special meeting in Effingham to decide whether to proceed with a new school building funded by bonds after a ruling by Attorney General William A. Smith that such construction cannot be financed from the regular tax levy. The district had awarded bids to L. K. Bowers & Sons of Topeka for general construction and Tucker of Topeka for wiring, with architect supervision to be provided at no charge, aiming to finance from a four mill levy and current funds. A state fire marshal recommendation to not use the building was noted, while parts of the old structure remain in use and temporary class rooms are formed in the gym basement.
