Orchard Cup to Wathena honors Doniphan Atchison growers

The Wathena Commercial Orchards Co led by W D White won the sweepstakes in the Doniphan Atchison apple derby, with 65 orchards entered. A banquet at the Masonic temple drew about 100 apple growers and officials from Atchison and Doniphan counties as honors were announced and speakers urged quality over quantity in fruit production.

Curlew Neighborhood Considers Rat Drive Plan

From Saturdays Daily the Curlew area considers a county agent backed rat drive to exterminate rats across the whole neighborhood. The piece notes rats have plagued the area, even taking chickens, and stresses that a unified, timed effort is needed to eradicate the infestation.

Fred P Barrett thrifted life ends in Atchison

Fred P Barrett 79 long time Atchison grocer past 731 Commercial Street died at 1:30 pm at his home 810 Kansas Avenue after a two year illness including a recent heart attack. Surviving wife and three sons with five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements pending. Local notices report injuries to Jack Moore in a Fifth Street crash and various community updates.

Mrs Mary E Morris dies after 72 years in Atchison

Mrs Mary E Morris 72 died at the Robinson home 608 South Fourth Street at 9 this morning after a long heart illness. Born Baltimore January 29 1856 she came to Atchison 35 years ago with husband George Morris who died in 1921. Surviving daughters Mrs Charles Robinson of Atchison and Mrs Ethel Ehret of Topeka, two sisters Mrs Ida Morris San Francisco and Mrs Alec Ray Kismet. Funeral plans not yet set. She was active in Presbyterian church and Pleasant Hour club.

St Benedicts Close Early as Flu Epidemic Hits Atchison

Classes ended at St Benedicts college at noon due to a flu outbreak with about 40 cases among students and staff. Mt St Scholastica will close. Maur Hill may follow. Schools resume first week in January. Several locals hospitalized or ill. city lights dimmed for mood.
