May Abandon Camps Over Earthquake Hit Hemet

The Hemet earthquake damaged labor camps and left harvesting crews short. Secretary Anderson said the County Y M C A may abandon planned summer outings to fill the need for young men, after a Hemet commission conference in Los Angeles. Anderson traveled to Hemet to assess conditions.

A chaotic Arcadia Puente Stunt Night raised funds for the Puente Red Cross. Acts from Monrovia Covina Pomona and surrounding towns entertained 290 guests, with 25 from Monrovia. The program included monologues, singing, ventriloquism, and a red Cross dinner.

Parcels for Soldiers Limited By Approved Requests

Miss Wilson warns against mailing parcels to soldiers in France unless they request them. Postal Order No. 1259 enforces that parcels to expeditionary forces in Europe contain only items requested in writing and approved by the addressee’s commander or organization executive. Senders must include written approval in the parcel and stamp the wrapper with an endorsement confirming the request.

Manzo Fined For Beaning Former Friend In Recorder Court

Judge Burr set the fine at 25 dollars for Countrio Manzo who struck Jose Quesada with an empty demijohn after a liquor spar. The two had quarreled when their liquor was gone. The weapon was rendered useless by the blow.

At Camp Lewis Seattle three meals a day for 42 500 troops will cost 14 000 dollars. In preparing the meals 131 tons of food will be used. The government will seek funds through the Third Liberty Loan to buy food and support the war effort.

Twins Born in Duarte to Mr and Mrs Griffith

Twin babies arrived last Thursday in Duarte to Mr J J Griffith of Duarte who works as Santa Fe agent. The girl died a few hours after birth while the boy survived and is reported doing well.

Missing horse shot near Monrovia driver’s cliff fall

Miss Jennie Baldwin, returning from Berkeley, found her saddle horse Pedro missing. The horse’s body lay shot and toppled over a canyon above Monrovia. Officials recovered the animal but the motive remains unknown whether vandalism or accident.
