Government balloon school at Arcadia advance urged

May Run for Congress Flower in Monrovia Considers Run

Montaville Flowers president of the International Lyceum association lives in Monrovia and is conferring with district leaders about a possible bid for Congress against Chas H Randall. If he runs it likely will be on Republican and Prohibition tickets with a presidential support statement. Decision expected in days.

Trades for Ranch Home In Tulare County Or Arcadia Property

Walter G Burr of the Monrovia post office has swapped his Arcadia property for a Tulare County alfalfa ranch of 40 acres with irrigation water and will move this month. The ranch owner exchanged the property for three Monrovia homes at 432 436 and 442 West Palm Avenue, with Burr trading the Arcadia parcel back to complete the chain of swaps.

No War Stamps as Prizes Warned by California War Savings

A War Savings Committee bulletin in California states that Treasury rules demand Thrift Stamps be sold at fixed prices and cash. Merchants asking to use stamps as bonuses are discouraged, though becoming authorized agents and selling stamps remains encouraged as a patriotic act.

Y M C A Cabin Campaign Sparks $1 000 Drive

Los Angeles County Y M C A launches a fast campaign to raise 1000 dollars to finish a cobblestone Y cabin five miles up San Gabriel canyon. The 17 by 32 foot structure will serve as a conference point on hikes and camps, with two hundred five dollar subscribers sought to fund the project.

Mill creek canyon road opens into Bear valley with traffic managed by the block system for the fishing season. Clark grade spots to be fixed by noon. Crest road access to Deep Creek and Little Bear Valley in good condition. First National Bank of Arcadia site narrowed to two locations. Arcadia Board of Trade defers selection, leaving it to bank directors.

Arcadia Red Cross organizes wartime pledge drive

An Arcadia Red Cross meeting at the church drew fourteen pledges to support the Red Cross during the war. President Metcalf outlined past and future efforts to ease front line suffering, urging sacrifice of time and resources. The Junior Red Cross reported forty members crafting quilts and knitting, with plans for regular vacation meetings. A drive to raise 1000 dollars for the national fund was planned to start May 20, with new committee chairs named for work, knitting, membership, convalescent robes, bandages, finance, entertainment, and publicity.

Allies Carnival a Big Success at Y M C A

The Junior Red Cross event held May 1 at the YMCA grounds drew strong support. Highlights included performances by Jessie Breuillot and Ouida Johnson, with Johnson selling the most carnival tickets to aid the Red Cross. A pig auction raised sixty six dollars from eighty cent tickets, and total receipts are projected around 180 dollars.

The school board will meet tonight to organize for work with Chas W. Stewart sitting in. Another meeting is planned for mid next week to take up business matters and re open the swimming pool issue for a final decision.

Field Meet At First Avenue Grounds Among Arcadia Sierra Madre Souna

A field meet at First Avenue grounds brought together Arcadia Sierra Madre and Souna Santa Anita schools. May 18 and Roberts' Camp via Sierra Madre trail are noted as high spots for the annual spring hike. Wheat Wheat saving plans amid wartime food rules

The United States Food Administration urges Californians to observe wheatless meals every day due to a critical shortage. Do not eat foods containing wheat unless necessary for health. substitute meats, vegetables, dairy, and other cereals. Meatless and porkless days are suspended.
