Hot Blast editor sued for 10000 damages

J Oscar Roper former Anniston Trades Revien president filed suit in circuit court against Milton A Smith editor of the Hot Blast for 10000. He says the October 20 article about a raid on a crap game falsely named him as arrested, causing humiliation and injury. He is represented by Stallings Gaston and NeSmith of Birmingham as the term of court approaches.

Talladega October 24 The excellent marble in and near Sylacanga in this county has long attracted attention as one of the largest and best strata of marble in the country The Maryland Alabama Marble company has leased acres of marble lands known as the Nix property near Sylacanga and will improve them immediately Heirs are to receive a royalty for all marble produced by the lessees The company will soon begin work on a 30000 plant equipped with modern quarrying appliances.

Calhoun Circuit Court Term to Open Monday

The fall term of the Calhoun circuit court will begin Monday morning with Judge John Pelham presiding. Several cases are on the docket and four weeks are expected for trials. The court will sit one week then recess two weeks for U S court to use the circuit court room.

J B Mitchell Jr and his clerk Will Davis were shot from their horses by three Black men. Mitchell was mortally wounded, Davis lightly hurt while investigators note the attack followed a cotton theft claim. If suspects are caught, lynching is feared.

Clerks Defers Action on Strike Until November Meeting

In Birmingham on October 24 the Local 123 Retail Clerks Association held an executive session at the Labor Temple. A resolution, urged by the hours and holidays committee, deferred any strike or walkout actions until the next general meeting on Monday November 2, as merchants had promised to sign the agreement.

In Burrs Montana on October 24 a general shutdown by the Amalgamated Copper company idles about 13 000 to 15 000 workers direct and tens of thousands more indirectly. The Great Northern and Butt Anaconda lines cut freight crews and Montana pay rolls fall by roughly 1 000 000 weekly. Butte streets show 7 000 miners out of work and boarding houses and merchants seek garnishments as creditors press.

The hearing of evidence in the case of James LeCroy charged with criminal assault began at 10:30 this morning in city court. Yesterday and today the court spent the time selecting the jury. The trial proceeds with only jurors, lawyers, and officials present.
