Tillman acquitted in Gonzales murder case in 1903

Lexina ron and Co. report that Jim Tillman was acquitted yesterday of murdering Editor Gonzales of the Columbia State. The trial traced back to 1892 with renewed conflicts through 1903, including a 1900 lieutenant governor contest and a 1902 gubernatorial campaign, ending with Tillman’s acquittal on October 15.

Saw Mill Accident Ends Life of Thomas J. Taylor

Thomas J. Taylor was killed near Wilson and Clark saw mill six miles east when a cart on a hillside overturned after hitting a stump. His skull was crushed as the wheel passed over him and death was instant. The accident occurred yesterday afternoon with no witnesses present.

Notable Embezzlement Charge Against Local Worker

M L Castleman 22, employed by The Sloss Sheffiled Steel and a raw come pany, arrested by Detectives Bodeker and Hamilton on embezzlement charges. Amount stolen not fixed. suspected over 5000 dollars with claims it could reach 7500. Found on arrest were 2156 in cash and checks totaling 671. Prior discharge from the Sloss company followed allegations of a high lifestyle and associations with disreputable individuals.

Were Quick to Respond Anniston Rifles Drill

Lieutenant Dill of the Anniston Rifles demonstrated rapid response to a dawn call. At 12 30 am the call went out and by 1 am forty five men were ready for duty. The company marched to the north part of the city near Col J H Edmondson's home, set up camp, and stood guard until 5 30 am before returning to town. Meals were provided for the troops.

Samuel Spencer president of the Southern railroad and a party of officials and friends arrived in Atlanta yesterday afternoon at the invitation of President Sproull of the Commercial club. They toured the city before leaving for Birmingham and praised Atlanta as a model city.
