Mortgage tax law changes record fees and rates

A new mortgage tax law took effect yesterday in probate offices, taxing mortgages at 15 cents per 100 or fraction thereof. It replaces the former rate of 1.30 per 1000, with two thirds going to the state and one third to the county, and applies to all mortgages at the time papers are delivered for record.

Governor vetoes vets home appropriation plan

Special to The Evening Star Montgomery Oct 3 reports the governor sent to the house a bill to fund the Jefferson Faulkner soldiers home without his approval and urged an amendment limiting annual inmates’ support to 12,500. The former appropriation was 25,000. The legislature will adjourn tonight.

Collector's and Assessor's Terms Extended to August

Tax Collector D. Z Goodlett and Assessor D. B. Barnes will remain in office until August 1, 1905, after a statewide bill approved by the governor extended terms from September 1904. The measure allows them to complete the year’s work and avoids a period without officials in the county.

Alabama Confed pensioners classified hundred years ago

The pension clerk in the state auditor's office finished classifying Confederate pensioners in Alabama and prorating the pension fund. There are 15,318 beneficiaries who will receive warrants via probate judges around October 15. Warrants mailed to counties next Saturday. Class details: First class 120 recipients 43.30. Second class 144 recipients 36.10. Third class 175 recipients 28.85. Fourth class 14,879 recipients 21.65. Overall, pensioners in each class will get about three dollars more than prior years.

Calera Marshal Wounded in Duel With Two Negroes

In Calera on October 3 Marshal O H Field confronted two armed black men near the Louisville and Nashville yards. The marshal received a jaw wound from a bullet fired by one of the assailants but is not seriously injured. The pair fled into darkness after exchanging shots. The suspects are described as very dark skinned, wearing black clothing and new black caps.

Negro colonization scheme gains presidential interest

Washington dispatch reports President Roosevelt reportedly approves an extensive negro colonization plan led by Booker T. Washington and Leigh Hunt. The scheme envisions reclaiming land near the Nile in Sudan for settlement by African American migrants, with Hunt traveling to Germany and Africa to inspect lands and coordinate with Washington.
