General Charles M. Shelley leading the opposition to ratification asserts the campaign will stay intact and keep fighting the new constitution. He says there is no tribunal to appeal to and vows to pressure ratification supporters to register every white man, noting many cannot register under the law.
G H Hansan of Lima Ohio an engineer on the W R R reports severe backache. After trying Foley's Kidney Cure one bottle relieved him and he recommends it to friends among train men frequently afflicted. McElreath Drug Co endorses.
A speaker warns that defeat will come through fraudulent counting in the Black Belt and declares that any leader endorsing the count will be politically damned. The claim frames the electoral process as a battleground over integrity and leadership accountability.
The United Confederate Veterans of Alabama opened its first convention in Montgomery today and will run for two days. General George P. Harrison of the Alabama division arrived last night as delegates from across the state gathered for the event.
Several hundred people attend the Sons of Veterans state convention as officials plan to declare a constitution in force and mark the Cradle of the Confederacy with an early sixties look.
Sidney Olive, a young white man, was killed at the Woodstock furnace plant when seven empty coke cars ran down the incline. He attempted to drop and brake the cars but lost control, his neck broken and his body mangled by the wheels. The accident occurred about 10 o'clock this morning and funeral arrangements were set by Anniston Furniture Company.
The fourth assistant postmaster general report details Alabama post offices and classifications. It notes numbers of presidential postmasters removed or deceased, offices advanced to presidential class, and changes in fourth class offices including money order and non money order counts.
In Alabama white counties show increased opposition while estimates keep the state majority for the new constitution around 25 000 though Black Belt results could lift the total. General Shelley and the opposition claim 20 000 with Underwood at 27 000. If returns favor ratification Governor Jelks will proclaim the new constitution in force within about two weeks.
The speaker, born and raised in Cleveland, describes joining the Twenty eighth Ohio volunteers and serving three years and eight months in the army. He practiced medicine in Cleveland after discharge and attended Mr Garfield and his family there before planning a move to California once his term ended.
