Cecil Arthur Dovely, chief dispenser in a Rossville drug store, courts Mary Barclay with grand plans and inflated self-esteem. She toys with him, delays a firm answer, and he endures a tense week, fearing scorn while clinging to vanity, until a pivotal meeting at her home.
In a tense scene at a quiet home, Cecil's overbearing charm invites a powerful display of fear as a mysterious dialogue echoes in a drawing room. Dove소ly, paralyzed by hearing a man and woman plot, recalls his past folly and realizes the moral punishment awaiting him.
In a tense moment Arthur Dovely contemplates marriage to Mary after a dreamlike episode with a phonograph that seemed to reveal his vanity. Mary reassures him while Dovely pledges to prove himself a more modest man before answering. The incident ends with the phonograph returning to town, removing the capital I from Cecil Arthur Dovely’s persona.
