A white man named Watley was found dead on the Southern tracks at Merrellton this morning. He had been run over by a freight train last night and the body was badly mangled. Coroner Franks opened an inquest as details remain scarce and no witnesses are known.
The sun eclipse to occur next Monday will be best seen south of Anniston while partial viewing is possible here. Thomaston and Barnesville in Georgia host the finest views with astronomers from Lick Observatory ready to observe. The total phase will last there.
Astronomers estimate the moon will contact the sun for a total eclipse centered near Thomaston with the central line about 200 yards from the courthouse. The partial eclipse begins at 6 31 3 4 a m standard time, total from 7 38 17 to 7 37 42, ends 8 35 48.
At an adjourned city council meeting the resignation of Riverman M. Markstein from the Fourth ward will be presented. The resignation has been with Mayor Henderson for days, and friends hope he withdraws it before council action tonight. Markstein has served several terms on the board and is regarded as a faithful official.
Harmony Sunday School of Harmony Baptist Church in DeArmanville will hold its annual picnic at Downing and Morris mill on Choccolocco Creek tomorrow. A large crowd is expected from across the country and many from this city will attend.
The Adelaide cotton mill contract was awarded this morning to J H Duke by Messrs Robinson Bros. Work on stone foundations has begun and the mill should be ready for the fall cotton crop. The Adelaide and Woodstock mills will sit near the old Woodstock furnaces, bringing hustling activity to Anniston with houses planned for workers.
Plans confirm a new Armour Packing cold storage plant to be built north of the Anniston Mercantile on Moore Street with an 81,500 lot purchase from Anniston City Land Co. The LL shaped building will include a 15 by 36 feet refrigerator and overhead trolleys for unloading. Contracts for excavations and brick work will be let this afternoon and tomorrow under builder H N Jones. The project, valued over 8,000, boosts Anniston's metropolitan status.
At Athens Ohio a mob of about a thousand sought to seize Gardiner who killed Ethel Long. Sheriff hid him in a large trunk then moved him to a Columbus station for safety, later transporting the trunk to a carriage on the court house cupola.
Akron Ohio May 25. A suburban electric line wreck left three passengers dead and three fatally injured with several others severely hurt in the aftermath.
A local notice describes a small appropriation for Ralston Cleaner and Disinfectant to aid cleaning of furniture and hardwood finishes. It promises benefits for flannels woolens and removal of grease and stains from paints walls marble tiling glass silver crockery and carpets.
Packing plants in every large city follow the same plan and this facility will offer a complete line of products. Anniston Produce Company will manage local operations and the cold storage plant. Six to eight men will be employed and the plant aims to open in about ten weeks.

Senator Morgan furnished senate papers showing New Jersey incorporation of the fourth inter oceanic canal company to expose efforts to hinder the United States canal project. He cites earnings of twelve large railroads totaling about 400 million in ten months and warns rail interests may leverage South American states to honor canal concessions.
