A labor dispute signals an imminent strike with widespread concern. Officials warn of potential disruptions as talks stall and workers prepare nationwide action, underscoring mounting tensions between labor unions and management.
President O'Connell reports a chance to avert a general machinists strike. Executive board members indicate Cincinnati San Francisco and North Pacific areas face most trouble while New England sees little unrest and Chicago may show at most 500 workers on strike. An Illinois Central settlement yields 25 cent hourly machinist wages and 5 percent wage rise for other shop workers.
China is set to obtain a 300 million dollar loan to cover indemnity costs. The agreement earmarks funds for settling claims and related obligations, with disbursal expected under terms of the financing arrangement.
London May 18 The Press Association reports that a Chinese loan of 300 million dollars with an international guarantee is practically arranged to be issued once political affairs in China settle. The statement notes negotiations were in England and Settle Down in China.

Messia Aubrey Boyles and J L Davis were chosen by President James K Powers of the University of Alabama to teach in the Philippines on a three year contract. They have received transport from Tuscaloosa to San Francisco with Pullman berths and will travel via New Orleans on the Queen and Crescent and Southern Pacific railroads. They must report to San Francisco within thirty days and then proceed to Manila on government transport.
