In Albany on May 17 three teens were wounded and many citizens suffered cuts and head injuries as streetcars ran with no passengers. National guardsmen shot two merchants, a non union motorman had a skull fracture, and others were seriously injured during the streetcar strike and martial city enforcement.
The Alabama Supreme Court affirmed a city court ruling awarding $2,000 to Mamie Taylor and heirs from the Supreme Lodge of Knights of Pythias. The policy on Thomas H. Taylor’s life was canceled due to alleged whiskey induced death violating policy conditions. Mrs Taylor, widow of the well known local tailor, was named in the suit.
San Francisco May 17 1900 Mrs McKinley is alive and slightly improved with little hope of recovery earlier reports of death denied by officials through the morning news cycle
A false death bulletin of Mrs. McKinley circulated in Aniston triggering a half mast flag display on the post office. An hour later officials corrected the report, noting the information had been mistaken.
Washington May 17 Advices to President O Connell indicate about a quarter of employing machinists nationwide have agreed to demands for shorter hours and higher pay, raising hope the strike may be averted.
