Legend of Kaskaskia Curse and Lost Town
Folklore ties the vanishing of Kaskaskia to a 18th century feud. Marie Benard, courted by a Kaskaskia chief, elopes with him after her father forbids the match. Benard pursues, the lovers are captured, the chief is bound to a log and cast into the Mississippi. The chief curses that within 200 years the waters will erase the town, leaving only its name. The site is now a ghostly memory near the Mississippi and the ghost of the Indian is said to haunt the riverfront.
