Allied Trades officers meet to discuss proposed plans for a concert of labor action and unity, with President Samuel Gompers presiding over the conference to coordinate strategy and goals.
President Gompers of the AFL convened a conference at AFL headquarters in Washington to coordinate a general movement toward a nine hour work day for all workers in the machinery trades. Attendees from the International Association of Machinists and related unions outlined plans to act with concerted effort to meet a May 20 target.
The steamer City of Paducah, en route from St Louis to Down River Points, sank near Brunkhorst Landing about four miles north of Grand Tower at 12 o'clock Sunday night. Between twenty five and fifty persons were drowned, only seven escaping with their lives. The ship had stopped at landings along its downward trip and loaded freight.
In San Francisco on May 14 at 10 oclock Secretary Cortelyon released a bulletin saying Mrs McKinley had a more comfortable day than in several days. President McKinley plans to proceed with the previously arranged San Francisco program of entertainment.

The fifty third annual encampment of the Grand Lodge Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Alabama met at Magnolia Hall with Grand Patriarch John Hillis presiding. Officers elected for the coming year include J. P. Brodie as Grand Patriarch and Lee Ferguson as Grand Junior Warden. About 500 new members were initiated and several new camps formed across Avondale Demopolis Calhoun Francis Dawson Coal City Anniston.
