A threatened strike by machinists and about ten metal workers in the region could begin on May 20 if negotiations fail. The National Association of Machinists seeks a nine hour day and ten hours pay for nine, or a ten percent wage increase, after a long period of consideration and attempts to avoid conflict. The outcome hinges on further negotiations and potential railroad settlements.
General Jas H Savage of this city appoints Judge J F Creen as aide de camp on the brigadier general's staff with the rank of captain within the Fourth Brigade Alabama division of the United Confederate Veterans.
The first Anniston Elks Carnival and Street Fair closed amid good humor and orderly crowds. Organizers expect to repeat next year, with proceeds likely in the hundreds of dollars and increased attendance from out of town visitors.
In Selma on May 13 a unique wedding united Charles Payne, a colored minister, and Ella Harrell, long-time house maid for Mr. and Mrs. B. H. Craig. The ceremony in the Craig parlor featured six white flower girls from the neighborhood, a colored minister Rev. John Scott, and a reception in the yard with a wedding collation as guests looked on. Local observers note the event reflects Alabama attitudes toward race and service.
The Alabama grand lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows meets at Magoolia hall in Birmingham tomorrow morning. John Ellis of this city is grand warden and will seek to become deputy grand master during the session. The grand encampment also convenes that week with local lodges sending representatives including Royal Oak No.106 John H. Reaves, Blue Mountain No.56 H. H. Fitzgerald, Mountain Oak No.35 H. H. Badders, Oxford No.185 F. C. Knighton.
In De Montsé California on May 13 Mrs. McKinley fell ill causing initial talk of canceling the schedule to San Francisco. The First Lady asked plans remain, and the President planned to rejoin the party once she is comfortable.
The Rome Tribune reports a party of Georgia figures will sail from Rome to Lock 3 below Gadsden for a week or more of fishing. Included are U S Senators Clay and Bacon, Rep John W Maddox, and others. Maddox will press for funds to open the Coosa. the rivers and harbors bill may pass next session. Russell Bros Photo Parlors in Anvision is noted.
